Tyler lounged on the sofa, his gaze fixed on the television screen, yet his mind far away in contemplation. "Why are we not rich, Dad?" he finally voiced the question that had been gnawing at him for some time. "Despite you working hard all your life, did you never wish to be a wealthy man?"
His father continued chopping vegetables, a subtle smile playing on his lips as he considered Tyler's inquiry. "Luck and fate, my son," he replied calmly. "They determine the extent of our wealth and the course of our lives. And no, I have no complaints against life."
The answer wasn't unexpected to Tyler. He knew his father's philosophy well. But his own aspirations were vastly different. He longed to live a life of luxury, to traverse the world with drivers at his disposal, to dine at lavish restaurants, and to indulge in the extravagances that only money could afford.
Silence hung in the air as Tyler mulled over his father's response. He couldn't help but feel a pang of resentment towards him. After all, he blamed his father for their current financial situation. He despised having to carefully consider every penny spent, yearning instead for a life of opulence and excess. Growing up surrounded by affluent friends only fueled his desire to escape his modest upbringing.
With a heavy heart, Tyler rose from the sofa and ascended the stairs, burdened by his own thoughts. He was determined to become rich, even if it meant defying the circumstances of his birth. As he lay in bed, thoughts of Emma invaded his mind. Her image, dressed to perfection, lingered in his thoughts. Although he had known Emma through his frequent visits to the home of Sophia and Olivia, today was the first time he had truly noticed her allure.
Tyler's reverie was interrupted by a text message from Olivia, his current girlfriend. "Goodnight love, see you tomorrow," it read. He ignored the message, preoccupied with his conflicting emotions. Did he truly love Olivia, or was it merely a fleeting infatuation? Perhaps it was Emma's captivating presence that had ignited these doubts. He couldn't shake the feeling that he was drawn to Emma in ways he couldn't fully comprehend.
Lost in contemplation, Tyler wrestled with his emotions until exhaustion overcame him. He drifted into a restless sleep, his mind still grappling with the complexities of love, wealth, and desire. The road ahead seemed uncertain, but one thing remained clear: Tyler was determined to forge his own path, even if it meant straying from the familiar comforts of his past.

The next day, after Tyler and Olivia finished their classes, they went for a long-awaited Subway date. Both shared a fondness for Subway, and the mere mention of it brought a wave of nostalgia. Their journey together had its roots in a Subway outing organized by a group of friends. Tasked with fetching Subway for the group during a picnic, Tyler and Olivia had their first personal encounter. From that moment on, Tyler, who had always admired Olivia as the prettiest girl in college, found himself drawn to her, though he believed she was beyond his league.
Despite Tyler's self-perceived averageness, Olivia was smitten with him. She, the girl every boy desired, found herself enamored with the unassuming guy who had gone unnoticed until he became known as Olivia's boyfriend. Though whispers and gossip surrounded their relationship when it became public, Olivia paid little heed. She cherished Tyler's presence in her life, viewing him as a blessing. For Olivia, Tyler filled a void she hadn't realized existed before him; she had never had a boyfriend prior to Tyler, while Tyler had experienced a few flings in high school.
During their Subway outing, Olivia noticed Tyler walking ahead, seemingly distant and lost in his thoughts. Alarm bells rang in Olivia's mind, prompting her to indulge in her penchant for overthinking. She couldn't shake the memory of the glance Tyler had given Emma the day before. Yet, she brushed aside the intrusive thought, reassuring herself that it was merely a fleeting moment and that Tyler could never harbor feelings for anyone other than her. Battling her tendency to overanalyze, Olivia reminded herself of her inclination towards optimism, a habit that had often shielded her from succumbing to negativity.
Olivia dashed to catch up with Tyler, closing the gap between them, which made Tyler realized that he was not alone, as they entered Subway hand in hand. Inside, Emma made her usual order, opting for her favorite Turkey sandwich, while Tyler decided on a Tuna sandwich, showcasing his penchant for trying new things.
As soon as they got their sandwich they went to last table which they always sat on. Observing Tyler's distant expression, Olivia couldn't resist probing, "I've noticed you've been lost in thought for the past few hours. Is everything alright?"
Tyler, ever the smooth talker, deflected the question with finesse. "Just stressed about my thesis lately," he replied, smoothly diverting Olivia's attention away from his true concerns.
Trusting Tyler implicitly, Olivia nodded understandingly. "I've been considering continuing my research paper from last year," she confessed, her passion for psychology evident in her words. "Perhaps expanding it with additional theories. I've always been fascinated by the intersection of art and psychology, and the profound impact art can have on the human brain."
Without waiting for Tyler to answer Olivia extended her support for his thesis, "I could help you brainstorm topics. You don't have to tackle it alone, and with over a year until the deadline, there's no need to stress," she reassured her, his nodded but seemed a little zoned out.
As they ate away their sandwiches, Olivia couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered in the air. Despite Tyler's reassurances, she went again thinking that something was wrong and Tyler was hiding something from her. Was there something more to his distraction than he was letting on? She pushed the thought aside, choosing to trust in Tyler's words and focus on the task at hand.
