Selina's POV
"Mommy, we're home!" Nora's sweet voice broke the silence of the house.
I looked toward the door. Nora was sitting on Luka's arm as they entered the house.
"Babe, what smells so good? Is that Lasagna? Oh, I'm so ready to dig in!" he sounded excited, without a twinge of guilt.
I gathered myself and beamed as I said, "Lasagna Bolognese. You guys are right on time. Dinner is served!"
"Mommy, that's my favorite! Thank you!" Nora dashed into my arms. She giggled as she said so.
The three of us sat around the dining table — our small family, once warm and perfect, but everything was about to change from today onward...
I quickly pulled my thoughts back and got up to pick up a bottle of wine.
"Wow, Chianti. What's the occasion, babe?" he winked at me.
“Well, nothing special. It goes well with the food tonight. So I thought, why not?” I said while opening the wine with a corkscrew.
"Babe, you're the best. You know that?" He said while chewing a mouthful of Lasagna, looking satisfied.
I placed two thin-rimmed crystal wine glasses on the kitchen table and filled them with the wine in my hand. Meanwhile, I took the chance to put a small dose of soothing powder into his glass and carried it to the dining table.
"To the Mood Goddess!” I said as I raised my glass for a toast.
"Yes. To her Grace, the Moon Goddess!" He lifted his glass in the air and drank it up in one go.
"Hmm, so good! This is such a great meal. Thanks, babe. You really are my perfect Luna." He planted a kiss on my cheek.
His perfect Luna.
Was it sarcasm? If I were his perfect Luna, then why would he mark another woman?!
All of a sudden, I found my mate the strangest person to me in the world. I didn't recognize him anymore, because he could tell a lie so easily in my face after dating another woman in the morning. And there, I saw no guilt in his eyes, not a trace at all.
I heard Violet let out a long, mournful howl from deep down. She was hurt because she lost her mate too, and she couldn't feel Luka's wolf, just as I couldn't feel Luka's 'love'.
"Mommy, I want some too!" Nora's voice brought me back.
"What? Honey?" I asked quickly.
"I want to try the red juice too." She mumbled, pointing at the wine bottle.
"Sweetie, that's no juice. And it's for grown-ups only. OK?" Luka laughed out loud.
Then, Luka and I had a few more glasses of wine. Maybe we drank too fast, or the effect of the powder was kicking in; he didn't notice the change in my mood and went straight to bed after dinner.
It was time.
I bathed Nora, watched her brush her teeth, and then sent her to bed.
"Mommy, will you tell a story before I go to sleep?" She blinked at me.
"Sweetie, it's getting late. Mommy had a long day today, so can we do it tomorrow night?" I said softly.
"OK. Mommy. Night-night." She closed her eyes.
I stared at her pinky face and felt sorry for both of us.
No. It was not the time for this.
Stick to the plan!
I stepped out of Nora's room and closed the door lightly behind me.
Then, I returned to our bedroom.
Facing up, Luka was lying in the middle of our bed. His face was slightly tinged with red.
I tiptoed to my dressing table, opened my jewelry box, and there, placed a heart-shaped white crystal pendant—the mind-reader crystal.
It was a precious stone that was passed down in my family for generations. With someone who had a gift of mind-reading, this stone could help enhance her power in doing so.
Luka never knew I had such a gift, though I didn't mean to hide it from him.
I held the crystal pendant in my palm, lay next to him, and put my other hand over his forehead. This had to be performed when the subject was unconscious.
As I closed my eyes, my consciousness spiraled into a void. Everything was a blur, and I tumbled to seek direction.
I hadn't performed this magic for a long time, so I was a bit lost at first.
Then, slowly, I found myself standing in a foggy woods. Gee, it wasn't supposed to be this foggy. It was never like this before.
I looked around, trying to figure out where I was. But the heavy fog blocked the sunshine, making it impossible to see anything clearly.
So, I had no choice but to pick a direction and keep walking.
I walked and walked, and slowly lost track of time.
Why were Luka's memories like this? I mean, this didn't make any sense. I should be able to see what he went through for the past few days, or even months, but I saw nothing here.
I looked around, frustrated, and was completely lost.
Just as I was about to leave this place, I saw a figure flashing by from afar.
The woman in the red coat!
I ran after her without a second thought, but she was so fast I just couldn't reach her.
I bit my lips and shifted into my wolf form, and kept running on my white claws.
Finally, I saw her again, the woman in red.
I couldn't wait to see her face, but when I saw it, I was totally at a loss...
