Something was off. That was the first thing that stuck. Not one thing, not something I could point to—just… off. It started this morning. The way she answered too quick. The way her eyes didn’t stay where they were supposed to. The way “I’m fine” came out like it was something she had said too many times before. I let it go then, told myself not to push it, but that didn’t mean I didn’t notice. I always noticed. The drive out to the job should have pulled my attention away from it. Usually did. Work had a way of keeping everything where it needed to be—focused, simple. Either it needed to be done or it didn’t. Today, it didn’t stick. I caught myself thinking about her more than I should have. Not just the way she looked at me yesterday or how fast she shut down, but the way she reacted. L
