It felt wrong the second I looked at the car. Not just strange. Rhett didn’t argue, but I felt it—the way he looked at that car one more time before following me in. The door shut behind us, but it didn’t help. It felt like whatever was out there came with me, like the air inside had shifted and everything was just a little too tight. “You okay?” Maddie asked. “Yeah.” Too fast. “What’s going on?” Jace asked. “Nothing.” That sounded worse. My phone buzzed. I froze. Another buzz. Then another. My stomach dropped before I even looked. I already knew. I pulled my phone out slowly, my fingers tighter than they should’ve been.
