Chapter Five The human body has a programmed reaction to the sound of a pump action. Your gut freezes. A flash of electricity runs up your spine, waking up every muscle, causing your body to sort of twitch, all over, all at once. Your heart rate doubles. Your lungs suck in air so hard, it makes a hissing sound. Your body wants to move, to run, without direction or destination, but with speed. All this happens automatically, instinctively, outside your control, before a thought has time to register in your mind. You could be a brave soldier, a cold-as-ice warrior, it doesn't matter. Your body just does it. It took about a tenth of a second for my body to react. I was just relieved I didn't piss myself. Slowly, I raised my empty hands, and turned to face my doom.
