Crucible of Iron

Mollie’s POV The sharp ring of steel echoing off stone filled the high training yard as Brian adjusted my posture with a firm hand against my spine. My lungs burned, my wrists throbbed from the endless hours of wielding heavy iron swords, but I refused to lower my weapon. Over the past few months, my daily life inside the Nightshade Fortress became an endless cycle of grueling combat, physical exhaustion, and quiet endurance. "Lower your center of gravity, Mollie," Brian instructed, his dark eyes watching every breath I took. "A trained wolf will sense your hesitation before you even decide to strike." "I am not hesitating," I said through gritted teeth, wiping sweat from my forehead with the back of my sleeve before lunging forward with a swift jab. He blocked my attack with ease, but the heavy impact sent a solid jolt through his guard that made his eyebrows rise in quiet approval. "Your speed is improving significantly," he noted, his voice flat yet carrying a faint trace of genuine respect. "Keep working on the recovery step so you do not lose balance." Training with Brian was intense, yet it was only half the battle I faced every single day. While Brian pushed my physical frame to its absolute limits on the arena floor, the rest of the Nightshade court treated me like a useless parasite. Cruel whispers followed me down every hallway, sharp remarks were spat behind my back by servants, and the high-ranking nobility made no effort to hide their disgust toward a human holding the title of Luna. They viewed my lack of a shifter wolf as a direct liability to their clan's survival, fully expecting me to break under the constant pressure and run back to Silvermane. I refused to give them that satisfaction. That evening, I dressed in a formal dark gown for a mandatory banquet with the Nightshade elders, my bruised knuckles hidden beneath delicate lace cuffs. Walking into the grand dining hall, the atmosphere turned cold instantly, the loud chatter dying down as I took my seat beside Brian at the head of the long oak table. "It is fascinating how quiet the room becomes when a human enters," Lady Vanya, the Beta’s wife, remarked loudly from across the table, her smile dripping with false, sweet venom. "One would think we are housing a fragile glass doll instead of an Alpha's mate." "A glass doll that manages to complete six miles of tactical drills every morning, Vanya," Brian responded smoothly, his deep voice carrying over the sound of clinking wine glasses. "Physical endurance is cute, Alpha," Vanya scoffed, signaling a passing servant with a quick flick of her wrist. "Yet, a true Luna must handle the heat of real duty without crumbling under pressure." As the servant approached my place with a heavy silver bowl of hot soup, Vanya reached out, her hand purposely knocking into the server's elbow with a sudden, forceful push. The entire bowl tipped forward, splashing boiling hot liquid across my lap and directly onto my exposed hands. Pain flared across my skin like raw fire, turning my hands bright red as the scalding broth soaked through my dress. A collective gasp echoed across the surrounding elders, several of them leaning back to watch my reaction, waiting for the helpless human girl to burst into tears or scream in agony. I squeezed my eyes shut for one brief second, taking a long, steady breath to master the stinging pain. Opening my eyes, I did not flinch, nor did I shed a single tear. I picked up a linen napkin, calmly wiping the mess from my fingers and the edge of the table as if nothing happened. "Accidents happen when one lacks proper control over their own space, Lady Vanya," I said calmly, my voice steady and clear as I met her triumphant gaze with a cool smile. "Though I assure you, my hands survived far worse than spilled soup, much like this fortress will survive those who mistake silence for weakness." The room fell dead silent, the elders staring at me in utter disbelief at my unflinching composure. I glanced toward the head of the table, catching Brian's gaze. The cold, distant expression he usually wore was gone, replaced by an intense, burning look of genuine admiration as his jaw set firmly. "Clear the table immediately," Brian commanded the trembling servant, his eyes never leaving mine. "And bring Lady Mollie a fresh setting." "Yes, Alpha," the servant stammered, bowing quickly and clearing the broken bowl from the table. "You handled that with remarkable grace," Brian murmured softly under his breath, leaning slightly closer to my side. "I learned from the best," I whispered back, taking a sip from my water glass to cool the lingering sting on my lips. Throughout the remainder of the meal, no one dared to throw another insult in my direction. The elders spoke in muted tones, occasionally glancing up at me with newfound caution, while Vanya kept her eyes glued to her plate in silence. Once the formal dinner finally concluded, I made my way up the winding stone stairs to my private quarters, my hands throbbing with a dull, constant ache from the burns. I closed the heavy oak door behind me, letting out a tired sigh as I walked over to the vanity table to fetch a roll of clean bandages and soothing salve. I reached for the small drawer on my nightstand where I always kept my twin silver training daggers for protection, but my hand froze mid-air. The drawer sat wide open, completely empty, with both of my blades missing. A sharp, metallic smell filled the air, making my skin cold with sudden danger. I looked down at the polished floorboards beside the bed, my heart dropping into my stomach as I spotted a fresh, shiny trail of wet, black blood leading directly across the rug and into my dark walk-in closet.
