When the architects and engineers were tasked with designing and building the V-Cities, they were elated and immediately wanted to break with tradition. Not for them puny pyramids or small minded Chinese great walls: the V-Cities were going to be the ultimate expression of Mankind’s aspirational and undaunted nature. A physical manifestation of their greatness.
And one of the things they decided early on, to make the V-Cities unique, to remind the millions of inhabitants they had moved into a new age, was simple: to number the floors - or levels - in descending, rather than ascending, order.
If you were on floor 1134, for instance, it would be floor 1133 directly above and 1135 directly below. At the very top was level 1. The Elites rather liked that, being number one.
