Chapter 47 The lift doors closed, sealing Spiker, Tavia and Smitty into the small enclosed space. ‘Floor?’ Almost automatically, Spiker said “Wait.” And, to their surprise, the voice replied ‘waiting.’ Each of them wanted someone else to say something, to begin a conversation to mark what was undoubtedly the end of one stage and the start of the next, but no-one seemed able to break the silence. Tavia looked at the wall, Smitty glared at the door and Spiker - broody and resentful - stared at the floor. Eventually, Smitty sighed and said “I saved his life y’know. A couple of times. And he’s saved mine.
