Rolf proved an enthusiastic guide, but his main topic of conversation was Allegra. How awe inspiringly wonderful she was and how she affected everyone’s life. He, personally, had managed two private audiences with her, and each time had come away so full of zeal he thought he might burst.
They saw: the tiny farm consisting of two cows, a goat and some chickens that provided milk, eggs and meat; the communal baths; the communal kitchens; the communal ‘areas of rest and relaxation’; the communal school and - perplexingly for those from the streets - ‘individual cells for meditation and contemplation’.
The children - proof these people had Splice - had been tucked away and hidden until matters had become clearer and Allegra had given them her seal of approval.
