Chapter 19 Spiker paused and looked round, eyes searching. The cutting of the vines and the corpses dangling from the centre of the bridge spoke of ‘savages’ who were capable of organisation and therefore grew in his mind, becoming more formidable and dangerous. From a tall tree some hundred yards in front of them he thought he saw a sudden sparkle, possibly from glass or - more likely - the sheen of dampness on a leaf randomly reflecting the ambient light. Now he knew they were not alone, he began noticing human traces. They weren’t just taking an easy route through the trees: they were actually following a faint path. And there were even fainter tracks leading off to the side. Once it was seen, it became obvious they were on a network of pathways used on a regular basis. But ….. they
