New Year on the RubiconThat New Year was long awaited and felt on the border of the Rubicon. Caesar's troops hoped he was the new Head of the year and Pompey's troops naturally the opposite. The men under Caesar and those of Pompey kept a close eye on each other throughout that New Year. Caesar's men hoped their commander would get the position of Consul, while those of Pompey hoped he would not to be elected to prevent him from crossing the border. Pompey's soldiers knew very well that if he were elected Consul, Caesar could cross the Rubicon with his legions without a blow and no one could force him to stop.
