9 - Deadly Threat

1324 Words
Kaelen Kaelen watched her go, a knot of fury tightening in his chest. His Lucia. Always defiant. Always pushing more than she should. The wind, which had whipped through her hair, seemed to carry her scent back to him, still mouthwatering, even while laced with a dangerous undercurrent of rebellion. He recognized it, the heady promise of life, but mixed with something else: challenge. And rage. Her rage. He felt it like a physical blow somewhere vital, like the throat or kidneys. His continued failure to show her that he cared was close to smothering him. Beside him, Ragnar shifted. Kaelen’s jaw tightened. "You," he growled, the word a raw rasp. He didn't need to look at Ragnar to know the glint in his Beta's eye, the subtle triumph. He had earned Lucia's gratitude, however temporarily. He had gained her trust, however conditional. And Kaelen, the Alpha, her protector, had only pushed her further away. “Do not promise her things that you cannot deliver! The pack will never accept her! No matter how much you swagger or how many healthy pups she bears you!” His anger poured out of him, displeasure hot enough for Ragnar to feel the sting of it, but he didn’t rein it back. The thought of Lucia, heartbroken again, hopes dashed, was making him feral in a way he could hardly understand. His Beta sank to his knees, shoulders tight with disagreement that he knew better than to voice. Despite Ragnar’s submission, he felt the familiar burn of frustration, a gnawing irritation that always accompanied his interactions with Lucia. She was a wild ember in his carefully controlled pack, and lately, she threatened to ignite everything he worked to keep stable. Her scent, usually a quiet hum beneath the daily din of the pack, had become their siren song. Irresistible, when combined with their desperate lust for survival. Kaelen gripped his father's journal tighter, the leather digging into his palm. The old texts were supposed to hold the answers, the formulas, the ancient wisdom to stabilize their dwindling numbers, to manage the unforeseen consequences of a human healer in their midst. But the pages after Lucia’s name was mentioned had been torn out. She thought he was keeping secrets from her, when the truth was they were long lost. Lucia, I am not hiding anything. But I can’t let you know that I have no answers either. A low growl rumbled in his chest, an involuntary response to the mounting pressure. It was constant now, the way the pack shifted, their gazes lingering on Lucia, on the places where her delicate steps had passed. Their unsettling hunger only grew, despite his best efforts to dampen her scent and their reactions. It was because he had inherited the role too young. He was too inexperienced. Not that he could ever admit it. He took a deep breath, fighting for control over the instincts screaming for him to establish dominance, to reassert control over the rebellious spark she'd just fanned in front of Ragnar. He had to be decisive. He had to be unyielding. For the pack. For her. Suddenly, a shift in the air, a scent that didn't belong. Not wolf. Not human. Something… other. His head snapped up, jade eyes narrowing. It was faint, distant, but undeniable. A foreign presence. Ragnar stiffened beside him, catching it too. "Alpha?" "Intruder," Kaelen hissed, his voice dropping to a dangerous rumble. "Bear. To the north. Moving quickly." It was more than scent. It was a sense of violation. The uninvited entering his territory. The playful glint in Ragnar's eyes vanished, replaced by the sharp focus of a hunter. His Beta's eyes widened fractionally at the word "bear," a silent acknowledgment of the sheer danger. A single bear shifter, especially when their senses were already scattered by Lucia's intoxicating scent, could cripple an entire wolf patrol. They exchanged a silent, urgent glance. The tension that had been crackling between them dissolved, replaced by the primal unity of Alpha and Beta facing a common, devastating threat. "Gather the patrol. Take the older wolves, the younger ones won’t know what to do." Kaelen commanded, already moving, slipping into the trees. They wouldn’t know what to do because he hadn’t taught them. Because there had been no attack by a greater predator in his lifetime. The timing was too convenient. It had to be because of Lucia. Her scent, the very thing that promised salvation, also painted a target on her back. He shifted, releasing the familiar power always coiled at the center of his being. His spine arched, bones grinding, stretching. Muscles ripped and reformed under his skin. The fine hairs on his body thickened, darkening to a rich, glossy black fur. His jaw elongated, teeth sharpened, and his human sight gave way to the heightened perception of his wolf form, every leaf, every dewdrop, every shifting shadow brought into stark relief. The scent of pine and damp earth exploded with new clarity. The foreign bear smell, sharp and metallic like a wounded animal, laced with that cloying sweetness, became a blinding presence. It wasn't just an intruder. It was a tracker. And it was moving with unsettling speed towards the lodge. A bear. Here. The thought was a stone in his gut. A bear shifter's raw power was legendary, their ferocity unmatched by even a full wolf pack in a straight fight. They were loners, territorial, and notoriously unpredictable. He ran, the forest blurring around him. Every muscle screamed with urgency. This wasn't just a border breach. This was a direct provocation. And if they were after his Lucy, he would tear them apart with his bare teeth. The thought was a hot, desperate fire in his gut, overriding every cold, strategic calculation. For all his commands, all his need for control, the raw, visceral instinct to protect her flared above all else. He burst into a small clearing, the foreign scent strongest here. A snapped branch. Fresh disturbed earth. And then, a glint in the twilight, reflecting off something metallic. Not a weapon. Something left behind. Kaelen approached cautiously, his hackles raised. It was a small, ornate silver locket, lying half-buried in the moss. He nudged it with his snout, the cool metal a stark contrast to the warmth of the living forest. It wasn't wolf-made. It wasn't human. And then, his keen senses registered a new, faint scent surrounding the area, almost buried under the musk of the bear. A familiar scent, one that made his heart lurch with a terrifying possibility. Lucia. He snatched the locket in his jaws, the metallic tang of silver burning his tongue, and let out a guttural howl that ripped through the quiet of the woods, a sound of alarm, of fury, and of pure, unadulterated dread. The silver locket burned in Kaelen's jaws, a searing heat against his tongue that only intensified the primal fear twisting his gut. Lucia's scent. Mingled, tainted, with the overwhelming musk of bear. He didn't wait for Ragnar. He didn't wait for the patrol. Alpha protocol, the strategic gathering of forces, the calculated approach—all of it shattered in the face of this immediate, crushing dread. His mate, in danger. He bolted, the forest floor a blur beneath his paws, his powerful legs eating up the ground with terrifying speed. Every muscle screamed with urgency, fueled by a panic he hadn't felt since the day his father fell. He ignored the burning in his lungs, the tightening of his muscles. Lucia. Lucia. Lucia. The name, a desperate prayer, hammered against his ribs. The combined scents, bear and human, grew stronger with every bounding leap, leading him straight, irrevocably, to the lodge. His ancestral home. His father’s sanctuary. He burst from the treeline into the small clearing, his hackles rising, a low, savage growl ripping from his chest. The sight was a fresh blow.
