The damp morning heat in New Orleans was enough to drive a person insane, and the red guinea pepper Marie had placed in her mouth only added to the discomfort. She knew the pain was necessary as the spirits, known as loa, demanded her sacrifice. Her suffering helped to appease them while showing the proper amount of gratitude for the coming summer solstice.
