CHAPTER SIX He didn’t think this through, his plan was to put someone in charge of babysitting her, now babysitting her was looking good he admitted. “You can pack anything you like, but I assure you we are not going to the Antartica. She was stubborn, argumentative, and highly unpredictable, and he didn’t trust any of his aides handle her correctly. She was time bomb waiting to explode. Marco looked at her with veiled, hooded speculation, he couldn’t think of anyone that could handle her. He had planned to travel for a week to consolidate the details of the deal, so basically, he was now killing two birds with one stone. “Lily, send in Carlos immediately.” He said at the other end of the receiver. “Carlos my security detail will escort you to wherever you live and supervise your packing. Lily will supervise all telephone calls you make and report to me. “This is ridiculous, this is some sort of spy movie.” “Don’t be dramatic Miss Kingston, I’m taking simple precautions in safeguarding my business. Money before anything else. Pack your thing we leave for the chopper in two hours.” “Can I ask a question?” “I’ve never tried to stop you, so yes feel free to ask whatever it is that bothers you.” “Are you always this heartless?” “Are you always this candid?” Her mouth went dry, and for a few second her mind went completely blank. “I think that if I have something to say, then why shouldn’t I? If I’m not being offensive to anyone, we are all entitled to our own opinions.” She paused and tilted her head at a challenging angle. Marco grunted. Not even the inane brunets he carried dared to criticize him or questioned him. They dared not criticize him. No one did. “And to answer your question, I’m cold and heartless when the occasion demands. You’re not here on social call you’re her because a situation has come up. Trust me Miss Kingston. I’m the opposite of cold, given the right circumstances.” And then he smiled, a long, slow, lazy smile and her senses shot into frantic overdrive. She licked her lips and her body stiffened. That smile. It seemed to light up her insides, parts of her she didn’t know existed, and it took a lot of effort to remember that the man was frankly insulting her, and that sexy smile was not directed at her, maybe at a current girlfriend he was thinking about—that instigated that smile. When he directed that smile at her, she might even turn to an ice sculpture. “So, you stuff me away somewhere, on a two-week holiday, probably with the bodyguards who brought me from the office, where I won’t be allowed to do anything at all because you claim I’m a potential threat to your deal if I have my mobile phone, and my computer. And when your deal is signed and sealed. You pop right back and collect me provided I’ve survived the ordeal.” “There’s no need to be so dramatic, the bodyguards won’t be there.” “No, I suppose that you would be a little risky to stuff me with men I don’t know, not that it would make a difference if the bodyguards were male or female. I’ll still be locked away in a cell with the key thrown away.” Marco inhaled sharply. “There won’t be any henchmen, I trust Carlos, but not enough to handle you. So you will be staying with me,I wont trust anyone enough to handle and keep an eye on you.” Alarm bells went off on her head, what exactly does he mean by I’m going to be staying with him. “With you?” Shot of awareness zinged through her spine, her heart sped up, sending blood pulsing through her veins, making it difficult for her to breathe. She might as well have a cardiac arrest. Trapped somewhere alone with hm, the thought terrified and excited her. “I have no intention of having any interaction with you at all. You will simply be my responsibility for a fortnight, and I will make sure no contact is made with any outside party during the stay. And please don’t whine to me you can’t survive for two weeks with your phone and computer. It is possible to live without your gadgets. “Could you?” “Need I remind you Miss Kingston that this is not about me. You can bring a color pallete and some canvas, or even embroidery on this trip, anything to distract you, but you will continue to be paid. If you’re finding it difficult to kick back and enjoy the experience, then you can always consider the other option: legal bills and no job.” Hailey clenched her fists, and waned to say something in retaliation, but thought it wise to say nothing. “Right.” “I’ll have to phone my mum and dad. I speak to them every evening.” “And don’t have any pets. She gathered her backpack and headed towards the door, when the door swung open, and Carlos entered the office. “Miss Kingston.” Marco called out to her. She turned at looked at him. “Don’t get so worked up about this”. His voice was clipped because this was as close to putting her mind at ease. Her eyes noted as he stared into them were chocolate brown. “This is the only way to deal with a potential problem. I promise you won’t spend the fortnight locked in a dungeon like you’ve already claimed, nor will be following you around every waking moment. In fact, you’ll hardly notice my presence, I will be working all day and you’ll be free to do as you like without having to communicate to the outside world.” “But I don’t even know where I’m going” Hailey cried out holding onto the note of sympathy she heard in his voice. “Consider it a surprise” he muttered he turned to Carlos, “two hours no more, no less.” “You got it boss.” “I’ll see you in the next two hours, and Miss Kingston, don’t try to do something stupid like run away, because I’ll hunt you down.”
