Chapter Four

1067 Words
Hailey was baffled as how this man whose values was different from her own cold make her blow hot and cold at the same time, make her feel helpless and exposed. The thought of her sharing a room with a bunch of strangers was slightly less pleasing, but did she really mean that? He wondered, he rested on his chair and looked at her with hooded eyes drifting over her face, defiant stubborn lips that formed a pout and her fiery ginger curls, and a challenging angle of her head. What had been the situation with her and Wesley, a family man, or did she enjoy taking on married men as lovers? He decided to test the waters and see what came out of it. If this was a case of termination, she would have her desk cleared as they spoke, but he wouldn’t let no misjudgments wreck his deal. “You have never thought to come work for me fully Miss Kingston? “No” she said. The silence in the room stretched between them. “And why is that Miss Kingston? Is my company too big for you to handle?” He asked, greatly amused. Hailey frantically twisted her fingers, “some people are not easily moved by money,” she broke the silence, because she was beginning to perspire with discomfort. “I was trained not to put value on material things.” “Intriguing, Miss Kingston, but maybe in your world, but in mine, Money is the bedrock to achieve anything, not just in my world, in everyone else’s, if you want the finest things of life, you need money and I assure you it doesn’t come free. And most importantly everyone has a price.” “What’s your price Miss Kingston?” Hailey fumed, her cheeks were red, she unfolded her hands, and released slowly exhaled air, she wasn’t going to let him get to her, because clearly, he didn’t trust nor believe her, and she believed it to be because of her relationship with Wesley. “You don’t believe or trust me and no matter what I say here will change anything nor will your thoughts about me; you don’t trust anyone which is sad. I’d hate to go through life alone without having anyone to trust, to discern my enemies from my friends. When you make money the center of your being, you loose sight of the things that really matter to you.” Marco lips thinned at her directness, no one spoke to him that way, they might say it behind him, but never to his face. “I suggest you hold your tongue Miss Kingston,” he said cooly, “I didn’t call you here to stateyour views about my life and my values. I understand you are under pressure and already tensed, which is why you may overstep your boundaries and speaks carelessly. I suggest you take a long hard look at the choices that landed you here in my office.” Hailey flushed. “I made a mistake with Wesley,” she muttered. “We all make mistakes.” “A mistake is letting a wine glass slipping through your hand and shattering into a thousand shards or drops of sauce staining your white. You slept with a married man” Marco corrected. “I will not take the word of a woman who sleeps with married men.” Hailey stood up with shaky legs to direct the full force of her anger at him, she refused to sit here and be degraded by this man. The urge to scream how dare you, was too great, but she slammed her lips shut. “You want me to believe you had nothing to do with this man, unfortunately your lack of principles in having anything to do with him tells a different story.” Color drained from her face. She hated this man with a passion beyond reasonable doubt, chin up, she faced him challengingly “you know what , Mr Dandolo, I don’t have to stay here and listen this.” She’ll never confess to him that she never slept with Wesley, because he already believed the obvious. Girls her age had flings and situationships. Even if she told him that she ended the relationship the moment she found out that he had a family, he still wouldn’t believe she didn’t sleep with the man. Which would lead to a conversation she had no intention of having. How would Marco Dandolo believe that the girl that sleeps with married men was in fact a virgin? Hailey didn’t like to think of it herself. She was never the type to rush into a coital relationship. Her parents made sure to stamp their values on her. She’d seen pregnant girls abandoned by the men they fell for, when it came to love and s*x, she ought to be careful. She believed in love and the representation of marriage and s*x after marriage. Temptation had knocked on her door when Wesley came around with his boyish charms, bloated flattery, and persistence. Her virginity was a reminder of the biggest mistake of her life. While she hoped one day would find the guy for her, she was resigned she might never do so, because what men wanted was s*x. And before you get to the price you will have to sleep with a thousand frogs, and there was no way she would subdue herself to the thought of having to sleep with one frog left a sour taste in her mouth. So, what will her boss think of her story? “I expect after all this, I’m being relieved of my job, and Daniel the branch manager will be in touch, so there can’t be any reason for me to still be here. You’ll just have to trust me that I won’t be saying anything about your deal to anyone. And you can’t stop me from leaving.” She picked up her backpack, slung it over her shoulder, turned and headed for the door. She didn’t get as far as the door handle. “If you walk out that door Miss Kingston, I want to assure you that I’ll commence legal proceedings on the grounds that you sold credible company information to an anonymous buyer on f*******: and that affects the outcome of my company business dealings.”
