IN THE CITY

910 Words
SAMANTHA'S POV It was already the day of my departure. I woke up early, took a shower, and packed a few things I had and needed. Miss Shelly saw me off to the main gate. The kids were still asleep when I was leaving. That was what I wanted so as to avoid the drama. Outside the gate, Nessa was waiting for me. The bus stop was not a long walk from the orphanage. "You are finally free, little Sammy." Nessa called me her second nickname for me. I gave a small smile. I knew she wasn't happy about me leaving, but she wanted to remain enthusiastic. We chatted as we walked down the road, leading to the bus stop. We both did flashbacks. We tried to bring back as many memories that we could of the past. Suddenly, Nessa asked me: "Sam, if you find out you still had parents, what would you do?" I was shocked by the question. "I don't know. Maybe I would search for them and ask why they left me to rot at that orphanage, " I said, unsure of my own answer. I saw a shadow of sadness lingering in her eyes, I wanted to ask her what was going on and why she asked, but we had already gotten to the bus stop, and she quickly changed the subject. "Sam, I need you to promise me that once you arrive at the city, you will call me immediately." Nessa said. "I promise. If I don't call you, who would I call?" I asked as we both smiled and hugged each other. We didn't want to let go, but we had to unless we would miss my bus. "I need to go now, Ness, or I won't make it to the city on time." I said although the trip was just an hour trip. The city was not too distant from the town where I lived. But I had to get to the apartment I rented and start my job hunting. So I had to leave. We pressed into each other one last time until we finally let go of each other. I got into the bus and found my seat. Although I was sad that I was leaving Nessa, I was thrilled. This was the first time since I can remember going out of that town. Although I was tired, I was awake the whole trip. I saw beautiful scenery as we travelled more. I took pictures and sent them to Nessa, with a tag still on the road. More than halfway into the trip, the bus took a stop at the gas station. I was happy because I was getting hungry, and I could finally eat the croissants Nessa gave me, I did not have enough time to eat before the bus started and I couldn't eat on a moving vehicle. Nessa was worried that I would go tight on meals if I didn't find a job within a week, so she packed croissants and cakes for me, believing the apartment I rented had at least a tiny fridge to store them. I didn't know for sure if that was true because I did not go in person to see the place, but the agent said there was one. The apartment was one I saw online. Since it matched my pocket, I contacted the agent immediately and paid for the place. After eating two croissants, the bus started moving again. After some time, I could see buildings from the large city and the sight was beautiful. I took pictures and when we got into the city itself the view was breathe taking. I was so excited that I almost screamed. When I got to my stop, I came down, but immediately, I got confused. The area was so unfamiliar. I immediately called the agent who rented the apartment to me to come pick me up. He got to my location ten minutes after I called him, and he took me to the apartment. Just as it was stated, there was a small fridge there, but it was a one room apartment, although it was on the bad side of the city that was all I could afford. After settling in, I asked the agent if there were any job offers he knew about that was not for graduates. He gave me two and sent me the addresses, and lucky me, the jobs were at coffee shops who needed waitresses. After he left, I immediately called Nessa. "Hey, Nessa. I just got to my new apartment." I told her. "How is it?" She asked. "It's not so bad." I said as I filled her in with every other thing the trip and the job offers the agent said were available. At the end of the called she told me: "Someone came over to the shop to ask for you." "Who was it?" I asked. "I don't know. It was a woman, though she said she had breakfast here yesterday and you the waitress on duty then. She looked rich too, I think she's from the city." She explained. "Okay, maybe it was the lady who gave the shop a large tip yesterday." I said. "She left her contact info. I'll send it to you." Nessa said. "Okay." I replied. "I'll check it after I get back from the interviews and job hunting." I said. "Okay, no problem." She said, then hung up.
