Mallory
“Thanks for helping me find a dress.”
Tina shrugs lazily. “Oh, honey. It’s a good thing you asked us. Your fashion sense is totally out of touch.”
“I would definitely not be next to you if we let you wear that hideous thing earlier!” Melissa crosses her legs as she chews gum.
Of course, you won’t even after the deed is done, you will be back to ignoring me again. Despite knowing this, I just give them a sheepish laugh.
But the dress they chose is rather…too revealing for me.
I look at myself in the mirror of the mall’s restroom. After we bought the dress, I told them that I wanted to wear it now before heading back to the Thorrs’ household.
I check myself once again and I’m surprised by their effort to choose a dress that fits my figure.
A green halter neck dress in a V-shaped design reveals my cleavage. My shoulders are bare as the puffy sleeves go down to my arms till my wrists and the hems of the silky dress are so small and tight that it only reaches to my thighs.
Looking at this, I feel naked wearing this dress. Yet, I feel good wearing it for some strange reason.
Not going to lie, this is the best outfit I’ve ever worn in my life!
“Are you going to a party tomorrow?” Melissa continues to stare at my reflection in the mirror.
“Yeah,” I reply, nonchalantly. A part of me is glad that I am going to wear something beautiful so the twins wouldn’t have to mock me and another part of me is to see Nigel’s face when he gets to see me.
“The dress is nice and all but you can’t just leave without a makeover,” Melissa quips as she places her arms on her hips.
“Do I have to?” I frown.
“Duh, it’s like you go out there half-baked, hon, you need to apply some makeup.”
Who would have thought that maintaining appearances cost a lot of money!
Noticing my reluctance, the popular girls exchange glances before they both smirk.
“We’ll buy them for you tomorrow and it’s on us.”
“What? But why?” I stare at them with utter disbelief that they would help me despite my reputation.
“Well, money is not a problem for us,” Tina says as she grins. “You gave us not only a copy of the Chemistry homework but also potential answer sheets for the upcoming test. Something like this isn’t a big deal for us.”
“Believe it or not, Tina here wants to become a beautician. Just let her do her magic.”
Another act of kindness today even though they always ignore me when the bullying arises.
Yet, I feel myself flushed when they are genuinely helping me like this.
“T-Thank you, Melissa, Tina.”
I guess even I, the one deemed the jinx, need to cut some slack from being miserable every once in a while.
========
They help me choose a dress so I won’t mess it up, they even bother to glamorize me with hair and make-up.
And even though my wavy red hair isn’t tied up like I originally thought, Tina just popped out a hairspray and made it, I’m not sure the right term for beauty stuff, less frizzy.
Now, the two cheerleaders dropped me back at the venue and I keep thanking them all throughout the trip.
“Mallory, I won’t deny that it was a fun hangout,” Melissa smirks. “But if you’re getting a makeover just to seduce the hot twins, I would have strangled Tina for a great job.”
“Hey!” Tina exclaims as both Tina and Melissa nudge each other’s shoulders. Then she turns back to me with a smile. “If you succeed, then I did a great job.”
I frown. No f*****g way I’ll seduce those assholes.
“I am not doing this to seduce them.” NOT IN A MILLION YEARS!
They both giggle. “Sure you are.”
We bid a quick goodbye and Melissa starts the engine and the car drives off away from the venue.
I realize how dark the evening sky is and because I had fun for the first time since high school, I didn’t bother to check my phone.
So I take out my phone from my bag to see the time. What catches my attention is the notification message coming from Sarah.
SHIT!
I make a swift turn to the entrance and dash my way there. I almost trip due to the wedged heels I’ve never gotten used to until now. Yet I am thanking the moon goddess that I don’t fall on the ground and have another wound on my knees.
As soon as I reach the entrance of the reception hall, Sarah has been waiting for me all this time.
She hates my guts since the death of Alpha Federick.
“What took you so long, repugnant girl?”
“I—”
“No matter, you’re here anyway.” She gives me a disgruntled look as she checks the dress and the makeup I’ve worn. “Good that you’ve done what I’ve instructed. Even a pathetic existence such as yourself knows how to dress well. Now, hurry along. My sons have been waiting for you.”
I just smile at her. “Thank you, Luna.”
If it’s sarcasm, I try not to show it.
“Look who arrived late today.”
I try not to show my disdain as I turn, giving a neutral expression. “Hello, Seth and Adrian.”
And as soon as I turn, instead of expecting them to give me snarky insults to ruin my day, the two just stand there and stare.
Dumbfounded, I want to know what made these two speechless but then I’d almost forgotten that I am wearing a dress so scantily clad that I couldn’t recognize myself when I checked myself in the mirror earlier.
I try to cover my breasts and at that moment, I was wondering why I bother to do so when these men aren’t attractive to me in the first place.
Yet it feels odd to see them speechless especially with Seth. He will find ways to mock me in every opportunity yet here he is staring at me from head to toe.
And as for Adrian? He seems awfully quiet. Well, he’s always the silent type but this time, it feels so different.
“Mal…”
Nigel’s voice interrupts this awkward silence among us. And when he sees me, he looks stunned.
“Mallory, y-you look…”
Perfect timing!
I grab Nigel’s arm as I beam at him, silently thanking him to save me from being next to them. “Let’s go get some juice punch!”
And despite that we are walking away, ignoring the twins especially during this important ceremony, they remain there staring at me without a word.
Huh.
That’s odd.
