SAMANTHA CARTER I pressed the cloth beneath my nose. My heart was still racing when something else happened. The skin on my lower back suddenly burned. I sucked in a sharp breath and pressed my palm against it. The sensation was so intense that I nearly cried out. "Does it hurt?" Professor Elara's voice became concerned. "Yes," I managed to say. My reaction came with a shaky breath as I tried to steady myself. Then the pain vanished… just like that. I froze. Professor Elara stared at me. For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
