At first, it seemed like the mountains were close. We’ll be there in an hour or so, I thought, which was a good thing because it was so hot. I’d already shed my sweater, and then I’d ripped off the bottom half of each pant leg by starting a hole in each knee on a rock. Finally, I’d done what I’d sworn I’d never do—I tucked my shirt up into itself and exposed my belly. I knew I was risking not only a very nasty sunburn but sheer embarrassment if we met anyone here in the desert—rather unlikely. But I didn’t care. I was so hot.
