The Cruelest Surprise

1584 Words
The night before graduation felt almost magical to Ava. Her apartment was quiet except for the faint humming sound of her laptop resting on the desk. The screen glowed softly in the dim room, illuminating the countless lines of code she had stared at for hours earlier that evening. But tonight, for once, Ava wasn’t thinking about programming. She sat cross-legged on her bed, holding her phone tightly in her hands. Her heart was beating a little faster than usual. A message notification had just appeared on the screen. Ethan. Her lips curved into a small smile as she opened it. “I have something important to tell you tomorrow at the after-party.” Ava blinked at the message, her heart skipping. Something important? Her mind immediately began to wander. She read the message again. And again. A warm blush slowly spread across her cheeks. Could it be…? Her heart started racing as an exciting possibility formed in her mind. Perhaps Ethan wanted to discuss their future. Maybe he was finally ready to say it. Marriage. Ava hugged her pillow tightly, unable to stop smiling. For a year Ethan had been patient with her—kind, caring, and understanding in a way that made her feel safe. He had never rushed her. Never pressured her. He had always respected her boundaries. And that was one of the many reasons Ava loved him so deeply. She had already imagined what their future together would look like. A small house. A quiet life. And a very beautiful family someday. Ava buried her face in her pillow with a shy laugh. “If he asks…” she whispered softly. “I’ll say yes.” She was ready. Ready to give Ethan everything she had been saving for the right man. Her trust. Her heart. Her future. And tomorrow night—after the graduation ceremony and celebration—she planned to give him another gift. Her first kiss, and her virginity. The thought made her cheeks burn with embarrassment and excitement at the same time. Ava placed her phone carefully beside her pillow and turned off the light. Tomorrow would be the beginning of the rest of her life. Or at least… that’s what she believed. --- The next day arrived faster than she expected. Graduation day. The campus buzzed with excitement from early morning. Students in black gowns and caps filled the university grounds, their laughter and cheerful voices echoing everywhere. Parents took pictures. Friends hugged each other. Professors congratulated their students proudly. Ava stood near the entrance of the auditorium, adjusting the sleeve of her gown. Her heart swelled with pride. Four years of hard work had led to this moment. “Ava!” A familiar voice called out behind her. She turned instantly and smiled. “Lily!” Her best friend rushed toward her and pulled her into a tight hug. “You did it!” Lily laughed excitedly. “Top of your department! I told everyone my best friend is a genius.” Ava laughed softly. “You’re exaggerating.” “I'm not,” Lily said, pulling back and looking at her proudly. “You deserve this more than anyone.” Lily had been Ava’s best friend since middle school. Through every challenge, every stressful exam, every late-night study session—Lily had always been there. Even today, when Ava’s mother and sister couldn’t attend the ceremony, Lily made sure she wouldn’t be alone. Ava squeezed her hand gratefully. “Thank you for coming.” “Of course I came,” Lily said with a playful roll of her eyes. “Who else is going to make sure you celebrate properly?” Ava smiled, of course it's you. Lily turned, then asked, " Where's your Ethan? “He said he couldn’t come to the ceremony,” she explained. “But he promised he would come to the after-party.” Lily raised an eyebrow. “Hm.” “What?” “Nothing,” Lily said casually. “Just saying… today is your day. Even if he's very busy, he should have made time to spend the day with you and make you happy.” Ava chuckled softly. “I know, he will still come and do that.” --- The ceremony passed in a blur of applause and proud speeches. When Ava’s name was called as the top student in cybersecurity, the entire hall erupted into cheers. Lily screamed louder than anyone. Ava walked across the stage with a bright smile, shaking the dean’s hand as flashes from cameras lit up the room. For that moment, everything felt perfect. --- Later that evening, the celebration continued at the graduation after-party. Music filled the large hall as graduates gathered together. Some were dancing. Others were laughing over drinks. Tables overflowed with food and decorations. The atmosphere was lively and joyful. But Ava stood near one of the tall tables, her eyes drifting toward the entrance again. Still waiting. Lily nudged her arm gently. “Stop staring at the door,” she teased. “Come dance.” Ava laughed softly and shook her head. “In a minute.” Lily sighed dramatically. “You’re impossible.” Ava smiled apologetically. Just then— The doors opened. Ava’s breath caught. Ethan had arrived. Relief washed through her instantly. But as he stepped further into the room… Ava’s smile slowly faded. He wasn’t alone. A beautiful woman walked beside him. She wore a shimmering gold dress that hugged her curves perfectly. Her round face and sharp cheekbones gave her an elegant charm that drew attention immediately. Ava stared at her, confusion clouding her expression. Why was Ethan here with her? The woman looked familiar. Very familiar. Ava frowned slightly, searching her memory. Then it hit her. Nora. Nora was also a student in their department. One of the top three graduates. But what was she doing with Ethan? A strange feeling crept into Ava’s chest. Still, she pushed it aside and walked toward them with a small smile. “Ethan—” She lifted her arms slightly, about to hug him. But before she could touch him— Ethan pushed her away. Ava stumbled back a step. Shock froze her in place. “Ethan…?” she whispered. Her voice trembled slightly. “What’s going on?” Ethan didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he turned toward Nora. And kissed her. Right in front of Ava. The world seemed to stop. Ava’s eyes widened as she stared at them. Her mind refused to process what she had just seen. When Ethan finally looked back at her, a strange smile played on his lips. “You remember I said I had something to tell you today?” His arm wrapped casually around Nora’s waist. “I wanted to introduce my fiancée.” Ava’s lips parted in disbelief. Fiancée…? Her voice came out barely above a whisper. “I thought… we were dating.” For a moment, silence fell around them. Then Nora laughed. A mocking, amused laugh. “Dating?” she repeated. Ethan chuckled coldly. “Dating?” he echoed. His eyes looked at Ava as if she had just said something ridiculous. “Ava, I was only being nice to you because you seemed lonely.” A few nearby students had already stopped talking. More eyes began turning toward them. Whispers spread through the crowd. “You seriously thought we were dating?” Ethan continued with a smirk. “You must have imagined that in your head.” Ava’s hands began trembling. The room suddenly felt too hot. Too loud. Too many people were watching. That’s when she felt a hand on her shoulder. Lily. Her friend’s grip was firm but gentle. “Come on,” Lily murmured softly. “Let’s go.” She began guiding Ava away. But before they could take more than a few steps— Ethan’s voice rang out loudly across the room. “I could never date someone like you, Ava!” He laughed openly. The cruel sound echoed through the hall. “Look at her pretending to understand relationships.” His eyes gleamed with mockery. “I bet she’s never even kissed a guy in her life.” A few people in the crowd snorted. Then Ethan added coldly, “Honestly… if she ever ended up in a man’s bed, she’d probably freeze like a statue.” Laughter rippled through the room. Ava’s face burned with humiliation. Her nails dug into her palms as she fought the urge to cry. But before she could react— A sharp sound echoed through the hall. SLAP. Lily’s hand had struck Ethan’s cheek with full force. The entire room went silent. “You should be ashamed of yourself,” Lily said fiercely. Her eyes burned with anger. “And she didn’t let you touch her because she knew you were a disgusting jerk.” Ethan stood frozen, holding his cheek. His face flushed with rage. But Lily didn’t wait for a response. She turned immediately and grabbed Ava’s hand. “Come on.” Ava allowed herself to be led away, her legs moving automatically. The whispers followed them. The stares. The humiliation. Neither of them spoke as they reached Lily’s car. The engine started. The car pulled away from the bright lights of the celebration. Inside the vehicle, silence filled the space between them. And Ava stared blankly out of the window… Still trying to understand how the happiest day of her life had turned into something so painfully unforgettable.
