A few seconds passed in silence. Then, Cain reached into the suitcase, picking up Evie’s stuffed bunny. He adjusted its little ears, his thumb brushing over the soft fabric. It was such a small gesture, but the sight of his large hands handling something so delicate made my throat tighten even more. Then, quietly, he said, “She’s going to be okay.” I nodded again, but the tightness in my chest didn’t ease. Because for the first time in a long time, I wasn’t sure if I would be.
