The morning sunlight felt warmer than usual after Cain’s mom left, but the weight in my chest refused to lift. Evie squirmed in my arms, letting out a soft growl that distracted me from my thoughts. Her tiny hands reached up to grab at my hair, and I smiled despite myself. “She’s really lively today,” I stated, glancing at Cain, who sat on the pavement, staring at us while his phone rested in his other hand.
