After three hours, Sera arrived at the Phoenix police station. She had already seen her brother's car and was relieved. With him, she would surely be able to ransom her sister. At least Sera hoped so. Some of the bail bonds were quite a mouthful.
She entered the building, which she, unfortunately, knew too well, and followed the corridors until she came upon her brother.
When she saw her brother's familiar, lanky figure, she sighed with relief. "Davis," she greeted him delightedly and gave him a quick hug. "How are you and your med school? And what did Sienna do wrong this time?" asked Sera slightly sourly. Her younger sister liked to steal and damage others' property.
Davis returned her hug before letting go and running his hands through his hair. "She stole again," he muttered, looking tired.
Sera bit her lips. The bails kept going up because Sienna had already been caught many times. And each time, Sera and Davis somehow bought her off. "What's the amount?" asked Sera, hoping that the money in her account would be enough.
Davis held out the slip of paper to her, and Sera bent down to read the amount. She had to read it three times, counting the numbers to be sure. Damn, was that a lot!
Sera let out a frustrated sigh. "If Sienna keeps this up, I'll ditch her next time. I'm hoping if we combine, we can buy her off. The job at Astarot has given me a little money. He gave me an advance," she explained, knowing the amount meant a financial hole for Davis as well.
He ran a hand through his hair. "This has to stop," he commented. "You can't spend all your money on her, and neither can I."
Nodding in agreement, Sera walked to the ATM to make the withdrawal. "I hope she finally learns. I just don't know how we'll get it out of her," she muttered as she entered her secret code and then withdrew everything she owned from the account. Even her last savings had to go. Still, it wasn't enough, and she hoped Davis could contribute the rest.
The latter went to the machine after her and withdrew money as well. He couldn't sacrifice everything because he was studying. It was expensive and also had to be financed somehow.
Fortunately, it was enough so that he still had some leftover money.
After that, they walked together to the place where they could ransom Sienna. Sera already knew the process well enough, so it went quickly, and they were soon greeted by a dark brown, pretty woman.
"What was that about?" asked Sera, visibly controlled as her sister's green-brown eyes scrutinized her.
If Sienna were to ask her for money, it would be much more convenient.
The young woman remained silent on the matter, as she always did.
"Sienna," Sera warned her sister with evident displeasure. "Do you realize that you are getting us into big trouble? Not only your brother but also I am sacrificing all our money to ransom you. Next time you steal again, we won't come," Sera threatened. She was furious.
"Thank you for getting me out," she said meekly.
Sera, however, recognized the glare in Sienna's eyes that told her she would steal again at the first opportunity. She grabbed her sister's arm and dragged her out of the police station. "You're going to go home and figure out how you're going to pay us back all that money."
"With my job, that's going to take forever," Sienna sighed, no longer seeming nearly as submissive as she had a moment ago.
"Your bad luck. If you'd sat on the seat of your pants instead of stealing, you'd be making more money. In fact, I suspect your boss isn't watching this anymore," Sera remarked, and her brother agreed.
Sienna's job at the supermarket didn't pay much, but many turned down her applications because she had a solid criminal record. This made many feel insecure, and it was only through good coaxing that Sera had managed to get her sister the job at that time.
"The job isn't to mine anyway," Sienna sighed as if she didn't care.
Angrily, Sera grabbed her by the shoulders and spun her around to face her. "I don't care, but enough is enough!" she shouted angrily at her sister. The fact that Sienna was taking everything so lightly did not please her at all. "Davis, take her home. I'll sleep the night at the hotel and then go back in the morning," she turned to her brother, trying to control herself. She didn't want to face her parents.
"Do you have the money?" asked Davis quietly.
"I'll have it put on my company's account and then pay Astarot back. Hopefully, he understands the urgency," Sera sighed and said goodbye to Davis with a hug. For her sister, she had only a "Better yourself!" left.
"I sure hope so," Davis agreed, pulling Sienna into the car, concern clearly on his mind.
"See you around," Sera tried to smile before Davis sped off into the night.
Now she just had to find a hotel to stay in.
