L.A – THE GLASSBACK CLUB, VIP ROOM
William’s heart thudded in his chest like a war drum. He could feel Est’s eyes on him—sharp, invasive, searing through the layers of calm he’d spent years perfecting.
He was trained for this.
Blend in.
Get close.
Don’t get noticed.
But now Est Morningstar—this unearthly, sin-drenched stranger—had picked him out like prey.
“You’ll do,” Est said again, his voice curling like smoke.
William swallowed. "I—I'm just a waiter."
Est leaned back on the velvet booth, legs spread with the kind of ease only predators have. His eyes glinted red for half a second—quick enough to make William question if he imagined it.
“You’re not just anything,” Est murmured. “Not with that soul.”
William froze. “What did you say?”
Est tilted his head. “Cute when you’re scared.”
He gestured to the empty seat across from him. “Sit.”
William hesitated. His training screamed no. His body moved anyway.
He sat.
The booth’s silence grew heavy. Around them, the club buzzed with laughter, clinking glass, and low moans from curtained rooms—but inside this space, everything was still. Like the eye of a hurricane.
“I like to know who’s working for me,” Est said smoothly. “Especially the ones who look like they don’t belong.”
William kept his voice steady. “I do belong. Been working here a year.”
“Lying doesn’t suit you,” Est said, almost amused. “You smell like law enforcement. Or maybe betrayal.”
William’s stomach turned. s**t. He knows. He knows.
He looked up—and Est was suddenly closer. Too close. One arm draped along the back of the booth, the other hand tracing the rim of his crystal glass. His voice dropped to a whisper.
“You think this is your story,” Est said, “but you’re already mine.”
William’s breath caught.
“I don’t know who you think you are—”
Est leaned in. “I know who I am. The real question is—do you know what you are?”
Something in Est’s words stirred a deep, strange ache inside him. Like a string inside his chest had been plucked. Hard.
Their eyes locked.
For a moment, William swore the world shifted. The music dulled. Time paused. His pulse synced to something ancient. Something dark. Something… familiar.
And Est—this monster in human skin—smiled like he’d already won.
Then, with casual cruelty, he stood.
“See you soon, William.”
He walked off, his coat sweeping behind him like smoke and ash.
William exhaled, only then realizing he’d been holding his breath.
He was in too deep.
And whatever Est Morningstar was…
He wasn’t human.
And he wasn’t done with him yet.
