KAIDA’s POV.
I gaze out at the vast ocean, the sound of the waves calm and soothing, a far cry from the storm brewing inside of me. Silverine, my best friend, sits beside me, her eyes also on the ocean . I take a deep breath, the words rushing out of my mouth.
"Silverine, I need to tell you something. Something I've never told anyone before."
She turns and faces me, a knowing smile on her face. “Alright, I am listening.”
"My parents, Lyra and Thane... they were killed by Ryker's father, the former Alpha of Manhattan Pack. He sought to eliminate any threats to his power, and my family was one of them. He was a tyrant, and my parents were one of the people who were brave enough to point that out about him.”
The memories come rushing back, like wave crashing over me. I'm a child again, hiding in the wardrobe as my parents argued with the Alpha. His roses and growls, the sound of furniture crashing, and my mother's screams as my father’s body was flung from one end of the room to the other.
"I was just a child, Silverine. I couldn't do anything to stop it. I was so scared, so helpless." A drop of tear fell from my eye to my cheeks.
Silverine gently placed a hand on my shoulder. “ I’m here…” she said and wiped the tear on my cheek.
"My parents were everything to me. They taught me about our heritage, our magic, and our connection to the moon. They were my world, Silverine."
I paused, my voice was choked with emotions.
"After they died, I was left alone. The pack didn't want me, they sent me out….on their Alphas’s orders . I was forced to fend for myself, to survive on the streets."
But admist this pain, I could not help but feel calm…at least I survived and conquered.
"I grew up too fast, Silverine. I had to. And I made a promise to myself, a promise to make Ryker's father pay for what he did. But now that he is dead…Ryker will bear the brunt of his father’s dark past.”
Silverine's eyes were soft and compassionate.
"Kaida, that's a heavy burden to carry. Revenge won't bring your parents back. It'll only lead to more pain and suffering. You will be bitter… do you want that?”
I shake my head, the anger and hurt still simmering inside me.
"You don't understand, Silverine. My parents were everything to me. I have to do this. I have to make him pay. He will pay for every scream of my mother and whimper of pain from my father, every single grip of tear I shed that day must be paid for.”
Silverine sighed.
"I understand your pain, Kaida. But there are other ways to honor your parents' memory. Ways that don't involve hurting others."
I took a deep breath, my anger and thirst for revenge threatening to consume me.
"You're right, Silverine. I know that. But the darkness inside me, it keeps growing. I fear it'll consume me if I don't do something. The magic…it’s too much to handle.”
Silverine's ears twitched and she turned her face to me.
"Kaida, what do you mean? What darkness? What magic?”
I hesitate, the words caught in my throat.
"The curse, Silverine. It's growing stronger every day. I can feel it."
Silverine's confusion was evident on her face.
"Kaida, what curse? What are you talking about?"
I take a deep breath, the words rushing out of me.
"The curse of the Lunaria family. It's an ancient magic, one that's been passed down through our bloodline. But it's a curse, Silverine. A curse that feeds on our emotions, our pain and our anger. The more emotions, the stronger the curse gets.”
Silverine's eyes are wide with shock, her mouth was opened but no words came out.
"Kaida, that's not possible. You're not cursed."
I smile, a bitter smile, one that showed my pain.
"Oh, but I am, Silverine. I'm cursed to repeat the cycle of violence and pain. Cursed to lose control and hurt those I love. Cursed to never love or find a mate.”
Silverine's eyes fill with tears, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Kaida, I'm so sorry. I had no idea."
I nod, and gave her a small smile.
"It's okay, Silverine. I'm just glad I have you. You're the only one who knows the truth."
We sit in silence for a moment, the only sound the waves crashing against the shore. Then Silverine speaks up, her voice filled with care and sympathy.
"Kaida, we'll face this together. We'll find a way to break the curse, to overcome it.”
Silverine's words are like a repetition of what my mother always said when I was a little girl.
"Thank you, Silverine. Just knowing you're here for me makes me feel stronger."
Silverine rubs her cheeks on mine . "We'll get through this together, Kaida. I promise."
We sit in silence for a moment, watching the waves, then Silverine speaks again.
"Kaida, can you tell me more about this curse? How does it work?"
I hesitate, unsure how much to reveal. But Silverine's eyes, it made me unable to say no.
"The curse is an ancient magic, one that's been passed down through our bloodline. It's tied to our emotions, our pain and our anger. The more we feel, the stronger the curse grows."
Silverine's ears twitched, I could tell this information was too much for her . "That's incredible. But also dangerous, I imagine."
I nod, my voice barely above a whisper. "Yes. The curse can consume us, make us lose control. That's why I've been trying to keep my emotions in check, to not feel too much. Cause if I feel too much….”
Silverine's gaze was kind and compassionate . "I see. And the darkness you mentioned earlier, is that part of the curse too?"
I nod, my heart heavy with my secrets. "Yes. The darkness is a manifestation of the curse, a sign that it's growing stronger. If I'm not careful, it could consume me completely. And if that happens….”
She quickly placed her palm over my mouth . “Shhh, don’t say that. Kaida, we need to find a way to break this curse. Before it's too late."
I nod. "I know. And I think I know where to start."
Silverine's eyes lit up. "Where?"
I take a deep breath, my heart pounding in my chest. "The ancient ruins of that coven, Silverine. I think the answers we seek are hidden there."
Silverine's eyes widen, her voice barely above a whisper. "The ancient ruins? But Kaida, that's forbidden territory. The pack has always avoided that place. No one is allowed there and anyone who goes there is to bear full responsibility of his or her actions.”
I nod, my heart heavy, even I knew it was a risky move . "I know. But I think it's the only way to break the curse. And I'm willing to risk everything to do it."
Her brows were furrowed in deep thought . "I'm with you, Kaida. Always."
“We will go there tomorrow.” I said and turned to face her.
“Alright.” Silverine smiled. “But let’s get going, if the others notice we are missing they might begin to start doubting our story…and cast us out of the pack…again.”
As we stand up, ready to go back to the pack , a sudden gust of wind blows through the beach, extinguishing the bonfire and sending us into darkness. And in that moment, I feel a pair of eyes watching us, like an entity… or would I say essence.
"Silverine," I whisper, my heart pounding in my chest. "Do you feel that?”
