Chapter four

Something was wrong. I knew it the moment he turned around. My eyes went straight to his face. Then his neck. Then his jaw. I searched for something I couldn't even explain. And then I saw it. Or rather— I didn't see it. The mole. My breath caught. There should have been a small dark mole just beneath his left ear. I remembered it. I had seen it yesterday. I remembered my fingers brushing against his neck. I remembered noticing it because I had thought it was cute that such a stern and domineering man had a cute mole that seemed to soften his features But now It wasn't there. I stared. He noticed. "What?" I couldn't speak. His hand reached for mine. I stepped backward. His eyebrows drew together. "Sammy?" That voice. That stupid, familiar voice. But suddenly it sounded off. Even just yesterday, he called me Samantha instead. Everything sounded wrong. The smile. The softness. The way he had touched me. The way he'd laughed. Donovan didn't laugh like that. Donovan didn't kiss my forehead every five minutes. Donovan didn't look like he'd tell me he missed me after being gone for a few hours. My heart began hammering. I looked at him again. The same face. The same eyes. The same body. But not the same man. Oh God. My stomach twisted. The unknown message. Get some rest, Sammy. You'll need it. He knew my nickname. And now I understood why. This wasn't some random stalker. Someone knew exactly who I was. Someone knew exactly who Donovan was. And someone had been watching me. "Are you all right?" he asked. I forced a smile. "Yes." His expression relaxed. "I thought you looked frightened." "I'm just tired." He studied me. For one terrifying second, I thought he'd see through me. Then he smiled again. "Go lie down." I nodded. "Okay." I turned away before he could see the fear in my eyes. I had no idea who this man was. But I knew one thing. I wasn't going to let him know that I knew. Not yet. --- For the rest of the afternoon, I played the part of the unsuspecting wife. I smiled when he smiled. I answered when he spoke. I even pretended not to notice every little mistake. He absentmindedly called the room beside the study Donovan's office. Donovan had called it the west study. He asked me if I liked red wine. I hated red wine. I already mentioned that yesterday. He reached for my left hand when he took me downstairs. Donovan had reached for my right. Little things. Tiny things. But once I knew to look for them, I couldn't stop seeing them. This man knew Donovan. He knew enough to fool me. Looked exactly like Donovan. But he wasn't Donovan. And that terrified me more than anything. At around seven, he disappeared. "I'm going to my study," he said. I nodded. "Okay." He kissed my forehead. I almost flinched. "Goodnight, Sammy." "Goodnight." I watched him walk away. The moment he disappeared around the corner, my smile vanished. I waited. Ten minutes. Twenty. Thirty. Then I got up. I had spent the entire evening thinking about one place. Donovan's private library. I had never been inside. I had asked about it. He'd simply told me it was off-limits. At the time, I hadn't thought much about it. Now? I couldn't stop thinking about it. If there was somewhere in this house where Donovan kept secrets, that was probably it. I slipped out of my room. The hallway was quiet. I moved carefully, my bare feet making almost no sound against the floor. The library was at the end of the east wing. I had never noticed how far away it was. When I reached the door, I stopped. There was light underneath it. My heart pounded. I pressed my ear against the wood. Voices. Two men. They sounded so alike but, One of them was unmistakably Donovan. My heart nearly stopped. I pulled away. My hand went to the doorknob. I hesitated. Then turned it. The door opened. I froze. Two men stood inside the library. One was facing me. The other had his back turned. For a second, my brain refused to understand what I was seeing. Then the man with his back to me turned. My breath disappeared. Donovan. The real Donovan. The mole was there. Exactly where I remembered it. My knees nearly gave out. He looked at me. Calmly. Not surprised. Not confused. Just Calm. The other man was standing beside him. The impostor. My impostor. The man who had spent the entire afternoon pretending to be my husband. Same f*****g face. I stared between them. "No." Neither moved. I pointed at the other man. "That's..." My voice broke. "That's not you." Donovan's expression didn't change. "I know." I looked at him. Then at the other man. Then back at him. "You knew?" "Yes." My mouth fell open. The impostor leaned against the desk as though he had all the time in the world. I felt something inside me snap. "You knew I'd find out?" Donovan's eyes remained fixed on mine. "Eventually." "Eventually?" My voice rose. "You let me spend the entire day with him!" Silence. "You let me-" I stopped. My face burned. Anger replaced the embarrassment almost instantly. "You let me believe he was you." Donovan said nothing. I laughed bitterly. "Oh my God." I shook my head. "This whole marriage is insane." The impostor glanced at Donovan. "She figured it out faster than I expected." I whipped around. "Don't talk about me like I'm not standing here!" He raised both hands. "Fair enough." I looked at Donovan. "Who is he?" Donovan didn't answer. "Who is he?" Still nothing. My chest tightened. "Why does he look exactly like you?" The silence was suffocating. Then Donovan finally spoke. "Because he's supposed to. We're twins “ I stared at him. "Well I can obviously see that now can't i?" He walked toward me. I immediately stepped back. "Don't." He stopped. For the first time, something shifted in his expression. Not fear. Something closer to disappointment. I didn't care. "You lied to me." "Yes." "You deceived me." "Yes." "You put another man in your place." His jaw tightened. "Yes." I laughed again. There was nothing funny about any of this. "Do you understand how completely insane that sounds?" "I do." "And you're just standing there?" "What would you like me to do?" "I don't know!" I shouted. "Panic? Apologize? Explain?" He watched me quietly. That calmness made me angrier. I pointed toward the door. "I'm leaving." Neither man moved. I walked past them. I made it three steps. Then Donovan spoke. "Samantha." I stopped. "You're not leaving." I turned slowly. "What?" His expression was unreadable. "You heard me." I stared at him. Then laughed. "No." I shook my head. "You don't get to tell me where I can go anymore." "I do." "No, you don't. This marriage is a sham. Built on deceit. I walked toward him. "I want a divorce." The room went silent. The impostor's eyebrows lifted slightly. Donovan didn't even blink. "No." My heart pounded. "Excuse me?" "No." "You can't refuse a divorce." "I just did." "You think this is a game?" "No." "Then why are you acting like this?" He stepped closer. I stood my ground. "You lied to me from the beginning." "Not about everything." I rolled my eyes. "I don't know how having a f*****g twin you let deceive me isn't everything.” Honestly, I could still feel my p***y throbbing from the last s*x. This was a disaster. His eyes darkened. “Language” Like I gave a f**k about my filter right now. "You don't understand what you married into." "Then explain it!" Silence. I waited. He said nothing. My anger slowly turned into fear. "What did I sign?" His expression changed. Only slightly. But I saw it. And suddenly, I knew. There was something in that contract I hadn't understood. Something important. Something he'd never told me. "What did I sign, Donovan?" He looked at me for a long moment. Then he said quietly, "The reason you can't leave." My blood ran cold. I swallowed. "What reason?" He remained silent "show me." He didn't move. I stepped forward. "Show me the contract." The impostor looked at Donovan. Donovan looked back at him. Something passed between them. Something silent. Something practiced. And that was when I realized something even worse. They hadn't been caught off guard. They had been waiting for me. Waiting for this exact moment. Waiting for me to ask the question. Donovan finally walked toward the desk. He opened a drawer. Then pulled out a black folder. My heart sank. He placed it on the table between us. "The contract." I stared at it. "Read the last page." My hands trembled as I reached for the folder. I opened it. My eyes moved down the page. Then stopped. There was a clause I didn't remember seeing. I read it once. Then again. My blood turned to ice. ‘In the event of dissolution, abandonment, or attempted termination of the marriage agreement, the wife shall remain bound to the husband until the terms of the agreement have been fulfilled.’ I looked up. "What terms?" Donovan's expression was almost painfully calm. He leaned against the desk. "That's the part you were never supposed to discover this soon." My fingers tightened around the paper. "What terms?" He didn't answer. I looked between him and the man who wore his face. Then the impostor smiled. And suddenly, I understood. The contract marriage had never been about marrying Donovan. It had been about keeping me here. I just didn't know why. Yet.
