FIREWORKS AND FUMBLES

EPISODE 3: FIREWORKS AND FUMBLES Setting: The rooftop, minutes after the New Year’s fireworks have ended. Anna and Ethan are still sitting under the twinkling fairy lights. There’s a noticeable spark in the air, but neither of them wants to acknowledge it yet. Ethan: “So… is it just me, or did that last firework look like a confused pineapple?” Anna (chuckling): “A pineapple? Really? That’s the shape you saw? I was thinking more like a lopsided heart.” Ethan (mocking): “Oh, how romantic! A lopsided heart for your lopsided view on fireworks!” Anna (smirking): “Says the guy who saw a pineapple. Maybe you’re just hungry.” Ethan: “Always. But honestly, Anna, you’re not one to talk. Your cocoa mug literally has a marshmallow mountain. It’s a dessert, not an engineering project!” Anna (pretending to be offended): “Excuse me! It’s called *cocoa art.* I’m a connoisseur, thank you very much.” Ethan: “Connoisseur of chaos, more like.” Anna: “Keep talking, and I’ll make you eat the leftover marshmallows. No cocoa. Just marshmallows.” Ethan: “Ah, torture. My kryptonite!” (They both laugh, the kind of laugh that feels natural and unforced. A slight breeze brushes past, and Anna pulls her scarf tighter.) Ethan: “Cold?” Anna: “Nope. I just enjoy strangling myself with scarves for fun.” Ethan: “Ah, sarcasm. My favorite language.” Anna: “Fluent, are you?” Ethan: “Practically a native speaker.” (There’s a brief silence as they look out at the city skyline. The lights twinkle in the distance, and the sound of distant fireworks lingers.) Anna: “You know, I didn’t expect to have such a good time tonight.” Ethan (grinning): “Wow, is that a compliment? Quick, let me write this down. Anna had fun. Alert the media!” Anna (rolling her eyes): “Don’t get used to it. This is a one-time thing.” Ethan: “Sure, sure. That’s what they all say. But then they keep coming back for my sparkling personality.” Anna: “Or your snacks.” Ethan: “Touché.” (Anna leans back in her chair, looking up at the stars. Ethan watches her for a moment before speaking.) Ethan: “Can I ask you something?” Anna: “As long as it’s not about pickles.” Ethan: “Noted. No pickles. But seriously… why’d you say yes to tonight? I mean, we barely know each other.” Anna (thinking): “Honestly? I don’t know. Maybe I just needed a change. Or maybe I was curious to see if you’re always this… quirky.” Ethan: “Quirky? Is that a polite way of saying weird?” Anna: “Take it however you want.” Ethan (laughing): “I’ll take it as a compliment. But seriously, I’m glad you came. Tonight wouldn’t have been the same without you.” Anna (mock serious): “Of course not. Who else would’ve kept you from eating all the snacks?” Ethan: “See? You’re already indispensable.” (They share another laugh, but there’s a hint of something deeper beneath the humor.) Anna: “So, what’s your big plan for 2025? Any resolutions?” Ethan: “Hmm… maybe stop buying weird ornaments.” Anna: “Good start.” Ethan: “And… maybe take more risks. You know, like meeting strangers and inviting them to rooftops.” Anna: “Sounds risky, alright. What if I turned out to be a serial marshmallow thief?” Ethan: “Then I’d consider myself lucky to meet someone with such… unique talents.” Anna: “You’re impossible.” Ethan: “And yet, you’re still here.” (Anna shakes her head, smiling despite herself. Ethan reaches for the sparklers again, handing one to Anna.) Ethan: “Round two?” Anna: “Why not? Let’s see if I can spell my name without accidentally setting myself on fire.” Ethan: “Ambitious. I like it.” (They light the sparklers, laughing as they try to write their names in the air. Anna’s sparkler fizzles out halfway through.) Anna: “Well, that’s disappointing. Guess the universe doesn’t want me to have nice things.” Ethan: “Or maybe it’s just saving the best for last.” Anna: “Smooth. Very smooth.” Ethan: “I try.” (As they sit back down, Ethan pulls out a small box from under the table.) Ethan: “Okay, don’t freak out. This isn’t another ornament.” Anna (eyeing the box suspiciously): “Should I be worried?” Ethan: “Not at all. It’s just… a little something to remember tonight by.” (He opens the box to reveal a small, delicate snowflake necklace.) Anna: “Ethan… I can’t take this.” Ethan: “Why not? It’s not like I carved it out of a pickle or anything.” Anna (laughing): “It’s just… too much. We barely know each other.” Ethan: “True. But sometimes, the best things happen unexpectedly. Like meeting you.” Anna (softly): “Ethan…” Ethan: “No pressure. If you don’t want it, I’ll keep it. But I figured… why not take a chance?” (Anna hesitates, then takes the necklace, her fingers brushing against Ethan’s.) Anna: “Thank you. It’s beautiful.” Ethan (grinning): “Just like the person wearing it.” Anna (laughing): “Okay, now you’re laying it on thick.” Ethan: “Hey, if the shoe fits…” (They both laugh, the awkwardness melting away. The night continues with more jokes, stories, and a sense of connection neither of them expected.) Anna: “You know, if someone told me a week ago that I’d be spending New Year’s on a rooftop with a guy who thinks pineapples look like fireworks, I’d have called them crazy.” Ethan: “And now?” Anna (smiling): “Now… I think I might be the crazy one.” Ethan: “Welcome to the club. Membership includes snacks, sparklers, and questionable ornaments.” Anna: “Sounds like a deal.” (As the night winds down, they both feel a sense of something new beginning, even if neither of them is ready to admit it yet.) Ethan: “So… same time next year?” Anna: “Let’s see if you survive until then.” Ethan: “With you around? I like my chances.” (They share one last laugh as the city lights sparkle in the background, marking the start of a new year and, perhaps, a new chapter in their lives.)
