**Episode 4: Midnight Confessions and Cheesecake Troubles**
Setting: Ethan’s apartment, a few days after New Year’s Eve. Anna and Ethan are sitting in the living room. Ethan is trying to bake a cheesecake for the first time, and Anna is supervising with a mix of amusement and horror.
Ethan:
“Okay, step one: crush the biscuits. Easy enough, right?”
Anna (grinning):
“Sure, unless you somehow set them on fire. Which, knowing you, isn’t impossible.”
Ethan:
“Very funny, Anna. You’re supposed to be my moral support.”
Anna:
“I am! I’m morally supporting the idea that you should never be allowed near a kitchen unsupervised.”
Ethan:
“Wow, such faith in my abilities. I’m touched.”
(He grabs a rolling pin and starts crushing the biscuits in a plastic bag. A corner of the bag splits, and crumbs spill everywhere.)
Anna:
“Oh no! The great chef Ethan strikes again.”
Ethan (groaning):
“This is sabotage. The universe doesn’t want me to succeed.”
Anna (laughing):
“Or maybe it’s karma for that time you called my cocoa art ‘chaotic.’”
Ethan:
“I stand by that statement.”
Anna:
“And I stand by the fact that you’re a kitchen disaster waiting to happen.”
(They both laugh as Ethan cleans up the mess. He tries again, this time with a sturdier bag.)
Ethan:
“See? I’m learning. No more biscuit explosions.”
Anna:
“Progress. I’m proud of you.”
Ethan:
“Thanks, mom.”
Anna:
“Don’t make me ground you, young man.”
Ethan:
“Too late. I’m already grounded by your wit.”
Anna (mock dramatic):
“The tragedy. How will you ever recover?”
Ethan:
“With cheesecake. Assuming I don’t mess it up.”
(He moves on to mixing the cream cheese and sugar. Anna watches, occasionally correcting him.)
Anna:
“Careful! You’re supposed to mix it gently, not wrestle it into submission.”
Ethan:
“Gently? Like this?”
(He exaggerates his movements, stirring so delicately that he barely touches the mixture.)
Anna:
“Okay, now you’re just mocking me.”
Ethan:
“Always.”
(They both laugh again. There’s a moment of silence as they work together, a comfortable rhythm forming between them.)
Ethan:
“You know, I’ve never done this before.”
Anna:
“Baked a cheesecake?”
Ethan:
“No, spent this much time with someone without wanting to strangle them.”
Anna (grinning):
“I’ll take that as a compliment. I think.”
Ethan:
“It is. You’re… different. In a good way.”
Anna (teasing):
“Aw, Ethan. Are you saying you like me?”
Ethan (mock serious):
“Don’t let it go to your head.”
Anna:
“Too late.”
(They share a smile, the kind that feels more meaningful than either of them is ready to admit.)
Ethan:
“Okay, next step: pour the mixture into the crust. How hard can it be?”
Anna:
“With you? Probably harder than it should be.”
Ethan:
“Thanks for the vote of confidence.”
(He pours the mixture into the crust, surprisingly managing not to spill anything.)
Anna:
“Wow. I’m impressed. Maybe there’s hope for you yet.”
Ethan:
“Don’t sound so surprised. I’m a man of many talents.”
Anna:
“Like spilling biscuit crumbs and burning toast?”
Ethan:
“Exactly.”
(They both laugh as Ethan puts the cheesecake in the oven. He sets the timer and flops onto the couch next to Anna.)
Ethan:
“Now we wait. What do people do while waiting for cheesecake to bake?”
Anna:
“Talk. Or, if you’re me, judge your life choices.”
Ethan:
“Harsh. What’s wrong with your life choices?”
Anna:
“Let’s see… agreeing to spend the evening with you, for starters.”
Ethan:
“Ouch. My ego may never recover.”
Anna (grinning):
“You’ll live.”
(They sit in comfortable silence for a moment, the sound of the oven ticking in the background.)
Ethan:
“Anna?”
Anna:
“Hmm?”
Ethan:
“Do you ever feel like… life’s just one big mess, and we’re all just trying to figure out how to clean it up?”
Anna (surprised):
“Wow. That’s unexpectedly deep coming from the guy who just learned how to crush biscuits.”
Ethan:
“Hey, even biscuit crushers have feelings.”
Anna:
“Fair point. And yeah, I guess I do feel that way sometimes. But maybe the mess is what makes life interesting.”
Ethan:
“Interesting? Or exhausting?”
Anna:
“Both. But it’s worth it. Especially when you find people who make the mess a little easier to handle.”
Ethan (softly):
“Like you?”
Anna (caught off guard):
“What?”
Ethan:
“I mean, you make the mess easier. For me. I don’t know how or why, but… you do.”
Anna (smiling):
“Ethan…”
Ethan:
“Sorry. That was probably too much. Forget I said anything.”
Anna:
“No, it’s okay. I… feel the same way.”
(There’s a moment of silence as they both process what just happened. The oven timer dings, breaking the tension.)
Ethan:
“Saved by the cheesecake.”
Anna (laughing):
“Let’s see if it’s as sweet as that confession.”
(They pull the cheesecake out of the oven, both pretending not to notice their flushed cheeks. Ethan cuts a slice and hands it to Anna.)
Anna:
“Moment of truth. If this tastes terrible, I’m never letting you forget it.”
Ethan:
“Fair enough. But if it’s amazing, I expect a round of applause.”
(Anna takes a bite, her expression unreadable.)
Ethan:
“Well? How is it?”
Anna (teasing):
“Hmm… it’s… edible.”
Ethan:
“Edible? That’s it? My masterpiece is just ‘edible’?”
Anna (grinning):
“Okay, fine. It’s good. Really good.”
Ethan:
“Ha! I knew it. I’m a cheesecake genius.”
Anna:
“Let’s not get carried away.”
(They both laugh, the awkwardness from earlier replaced by their usual banter. As they finish their cheesecake, the night feels lighter, as if a weight has been lifted.)
Ethan:
“Thanks for tonight, Anna. I needed this.”
Anna:
“Me too. Even if it did involve a kitchen disaster.”
Ethan:
“Hey, it was a *delicious* disaster.”
Anna:
“True. Maybe we should do this again sometime.”
Ethan:
“Careful. I might hold you to that.”
Anna (smiling):
“I hope you do.”
(The episode ends with them sitting on the couch, sharing the last bite of cheesecake and a newfound understanding of each other.)
