Amaury returned to the board to find Elizabeth looking discomfited and Gavin clearly pleased. Their guest made an elaborate show of moving from the best seat, but Amaury did not take it. James scurried into the hall and sat in the lord’s place while Amaury seated himself at Elizabeth’s side. She flicked a quick glance his way and he knew that she was concerned about some matter. Their meal was simple but hearty, and welcome after the night’s activities. Amaury was breaking his fast at midday and was glad of the stew.
