"Aysa" I breathed. He paused, straightening up. "Finally! The spoiled brat remembers" I was the girl who had hurt him. The story he told me about in the garden. It was about me and him. He knew who I was from the moment we met. His words were harsh and cold. I flinched under his gaze. "Where have you been?" I asked, my heart thudding furiously against my chest. "I thought you had died. He said they killed all the half-bloods" "Still listening to Soren I see," He chuckled bitterly. " Open the door Alphea or I'll break it and we'll both get caught" Was this the same boy I kissed in the garden? He was so sweet to me before I gained my memories, now he hated me. I frowned. He should have been happy to see me like I was happy to see him. We were fine before I remembered. He loved me before I remembered. "You're confused" he observed. "Did I do something wrong?" I asked, stepping forward. Aysa took a step back. "I don't have time to make you feel better about yourself" I scoffed, "Aysa. If I did something wrong, I would like to know. Back in the garden, the girl you told me about, I know I'm her but I never walked out on you. I would never hurt you. I am so sorry for what happened to you and your people," "Cut the bullshit Al. You were spared from it. You know nothing" he hissed, contempt lacing his every word. Aysa hated me. My dearest friend hated me. "I only want to look at the files. I'm looking for surviving witches," I told him. He shook his head. At the snap of his fingers, the door creaked open and he slipped out. I hurried after him but found myself alone in the dark hallway. He was gone. I hid behind a pillar when a guard passed by. I felt the disturbing urge to follow him. He had a bottle of glowing purple liquid in his hand. I had seen the elixir somewhere before. The craftmanship looked so familiar. I followed after him. He descended down a flight of stairs that led to a tunnel beneath the mansion. He came to a stop in front of a huge metallic door. I pushed myself against the wall when he spun around. He entered a passcode and the round silver door clicked open. I hurried in just as the door shut behind me. There were hundreds of small cells built into the walls. Women were chattering in all the cells. In a faraway cell, there were three boys and a girl forced into one cell. They were dressed like Aysa. I knocked the guard out and approached one of the cells. There was a woman will long brown hair and glowing blue eyes. Recognition flashed briefly in her eyes. I knew her and she knew me. She was covered in cuts and bruises but it did not make her any less recognisable. "Sarani" I smiled, excitement coursing through me. She reached a hand through the bars of the cell to touch my face. I leaned into her touch. My aunt was alive. "My lady" she smiled. Sarani let out a breath of air from her mouth as she caressed my face. "You remember" she cried. I nodded. Her smile dropped as a look of fear took over. She trembled, backing away from me. "You can't be here," she said, shaking her head. "You're not strong enough. Not yet. You need to leave. If they find you here, they'll take you to the North and all will be lost" "I'm getting you out of here" I protested. "All of you," I said, looking around at the glowing blue eyes of the other women. Her cell needed a passcode to be opened but I could get past that. I stretched my hand toward the cell, the passcode machine caught fire and Sarani's cell clicked open. I rushed in and wrapped my arms around her. I hadn't seen her in two hundred years. I let the tears I had been holding back spill as she stroked my hair. I held her at arm's length studying her. She was still beautiful. The bruises and the scars had changed nothing about her beauty. Before I could move, I felt a cold metal snap around my neck. I spun around, my silver eyes wide with fear. It was a woman, she had a long scar starting from the skin above her right eye and ending right beneath her cheek. From the way her blue eyes glowed, I could tell she was a witch. I tried to use my powers but the metal collar around my neck got tighter and tighter until I felt my power drain from me and my body get weaker. I slumped against Sarani. "Let her go....please," Sarani cried. "She came here, thinking she could free you all. A few weeks here will teach her otherwise" the woman said. My vision got blurry and I struggled to breathe. Sarani kneeled on the ground, holding me in her arms. " You'll get used to the collar. We all did" she whispered. "Why didn't you leave when I asked you to?" "We are first ladies. We stick together. I'll get us out of here" I whispered, shivering from the cold. My friends would find us. They had to. "There's more of us" Sarani shook her head. I frowned. There were more witches? "They took some of us to the North pole. I've been there before. We run shifts. Sometimes we go and the ones there get to come here for a few weeks. After three weeks, we return and they go back to the North pole. Today marks the third week since we've been back. We head for the North pole tomorrow but this time we are not coming back. I overheard the guards talking" Sarani explained. "What do you do at the North pole?" I asked, confused. "We dig through the ice. They're looking for something. We don't know what it is" she replied. I couldn't escape now. I had to free the other witches from the North pole. Now, I hoped my friends wouldn't find me. How was I going to free all of them without my powers? Brady and Leah were probably freaking out by now. The metal door creaked open and Soren walked in. His father followed after him. My eyes widened as realization dawned on me. The guard I had followed here was a trap. Soren had set me up, again. I should have known better. It had been too easy. Soren's head was bowed, and he avoided eye contact with me. "It's lovely to see you again, daughter of Rachel" King Rikki chuckled. I wanted to wipe that smug look off his ugly scarred face. "I can't say the same about you" I replied, leaning against the cold wars and placing my arm over my knee. "Well, I'll leave you now. I only wanted to make sure my son had done what was asked of him," King Rikki said, he turned to leave. "King Rikki," I called out. "Pray I never get out of here. I will not be as merciful to you as the gods" He faltered in his steps, turning around to look at me. I saw fear flash in his dark brown eyes before he left the room. I looked at Soren expectantly. "I'm sorry," he said "I had no choice" "Trust me, Soren, there are no hard feelings but I will never forget this. You're a wimp and when I come for your father, I'll come for you too" I hissed. A pang of hurt shot through my heart but I pushed it away. How many times had he betrayed me, his mate, for his father? He nodded and then left. Sarani refused to answer any of my questions about what happened to Ruth and I couldn't help but feel that something terrible had happened. I did not push her, whatever had happened, it was obvious that it was very painful for Sarani. My eyes were fluttering close when the door creaked open again. This time, Aysa walked in. Two other men accompanied him. I stood to my feet. Was he here for me? He walked past my cell, heading for the cell in the corner. He broke the passcode machine and opened the cell. Aysa pulled the girl in the cell into his arms and held onto her tightly. It was as if there was no one else in the room but them. He let her go after a few moments and took her hand. The seven of them rushed towards the exit. "Aysa" I whispered. He paused. "Go," he told his friends. The girl looked at him, reluctance burning in her eyes. Were they together? There was a time when he had looked at me the way he was looking at her. He kissed her head and nudged her softly. She glanced at him one last time before hurrying outside with the others. "Help me. Please....help us" I begged. He shook his head. "I'm not your dog anymore" His words slammed into me, bringing up a familiar memory from all those years ago. "No, you're not. You never were," I whispered, reaching my hands through the bars to grab the black cloth around his neck. He stepped back and the cloth fell into my hand. He was beautiful. Aysa was so beautiful, it made my chest ache. "I will repay you. Please" I begged, tears threatening to spill over. "I only look out for my people. You are not my people," he said. "My mother saved your life," I cried. " And I'm your best friend. I am your people" "Your mother let my father die and you treated me like a dog. Like I was nothing," he hissed "You don't understand" I shook my head. I didn't have time to explain why I treated him the way I did but if he helped me and we all escaped, there would be time to explain. "Remember what I said under the wisteria tree. I will hurt you as much as you hurt me. Save yourself Alphea. I'm done with you. We are no more" he clenched his jaw and left, taking the last piece of my heart with him. I let out a loud sob, whimpering in pain. Sarani held onto me as I cried what was left of my heart out. They were all liars. Soren, Aysa, my mother. They swore they would be with me, that they would always protect me. They were all liars. They didn't love me. My eyes glowed as silver sparks escaped from the sides of my eyes and my tears turned silver. Everything seemed to click into place. We were all going to the North pole but we would come back. I smiled to myself, burying my face into Sarani's neck.
