Chapter Tweanty-Two: The Pull

1121 Words
The music was alive, pulsing through Claire’s body as she moved. She and Sarah had worked their way into the heart of the crowd, where the energy was electric, the air thick with the scent of sweat, perfume, and alcohol. Claire was lost in it all, the weight of everything back home—Evan, the mate bond, the pack—completely forgotten in the moment. She laughed as she twirled, Sarah spinning with her, their arms entwined. They were in perfect sync, two friends who had found freedom in each other’s company. Tonight, they were invincible. But then, just as Claire felt the tension of the night completely dissolve, something shifted. It started like a whisper, a flutter in the air, as if someone had entered her personal space without her realizing. The feeling crept through her senses, faint but undeniable. The way the air seemed to thicken around her, the sudden tightness in her chest. Claire froze for a split second, a chill running down her spine. She could feel him. *Him.* Her heart raced, and she instinctively turned her head, scanning the crowd. She didn’t know what she was searching for, but the bond—the pull—was there, tugging at her like an invisible thread. She knew without a doubt that Evan was near. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. She could almost smell him—his scent, familiar and intoxicating—but when her gaze swept across the dance floor, there was no sign of him. The place was packed, bodies moving in all directions, but there was no trace of the man who had haunted her thoughts for weeks. Her breath caught in her throat. She couldn’t deny it anymore. *It was him.* The bond had flared, and it was as though every nerve in her body was attuned to Evan’s presence, even though she couldn’t see him. She spun around again, the beat of the music still moving her, but now, it felt like the world had slowed just for her. Her pulse thrummed in her ears, and for a moment, she felt weightless, suspended in the connection that seemed to reach across the space between them. “Claire? You okay?” Sarah’s voice broke through the haze, pulling her back to the present. Claire blinked, her eyes still scanning the room. “Yeah, I... I thought I felt him,” she admitted, though the words sounded ridiculous to her own ears. Sarah raised an eyebrow. “*Him*? Who?” Claire hesitated, biting her lip. She couldn’t explain it, not to Sarah. How could she? No one else could feel what she was feeling. Not unless they were… Her heart gave an unsteady beat at the thought, but she quickly shoved it aside. Tonight wasn’t about that. Tonight was about fun. Before she could respond, a couple of guys, clearly in vacation mode, approached them. They were laughing and trying to get their attention, and Claire couldn’t help but feel a surge of irritation. It wasn’t that she minded the attention—it was the fact that her entire focus was still on the lingering sensation of Evan’s presence, even though she couldn’t find him anywhere. Sarah shot Claire a playful grin. “Why not? We could use a break from the dancing.” Claire rolled her eyes but couldn’t help the smile that tugged at her lips. “Sure, why not,” she said, plastering on a more carefree expression. The guys tried to coax them into a group dance, and Claire reluctantly joined in, though her mind kept drifting back to the inexplicable feeling of Evan’s nearness. Every time she moved, she half expected to turn and see him there, watching her, his eyes dark with something she couldn’t name. But there was nothing. Just the heat of the dance floor and the vague sense that he was close, but still out of reach. She pushed it down again, focusing on the moment. The guys were fun, and for a while, she let herself get caught up in the rhythm, letting the music consume her, her body swaying to the beat. But that pull, that whisper, was constant. Every time she felt the light touch of another hand, every time the music slowed, her mind drifted back to Evan, and the bond that she couldn’t ignore any longer. She couldn’t understand it. She didn’t want to understand it. Not right now. The moment stretched on, and just as she thought she might have finally shaken the feeling, the pull intensified. It was more than just a flicker now; it was a sharp tug at her chest, like a magnet pulling her in a direction she didn’t want to go. She stopped mid-dance, turning sharply toward the edge of the crowd. She felt him—*she knew she did*—but when she looked, he wasn’t there. Her breath caught in her throat. The tug was almost suffocating now, too strong to ignore. Her body betrayed her, wanting to go toward it, but she stood still, confused and disoriented. What was happening? Why was she *feeling* this? She glanced at Sarah, but her friend didn’t seem to notice anything unusual. “You okay?” Sarah asked, her voice concerned but still light, not sensing the change in Claire’s demeanor. “Yeah,” Claire breathed out, her voice shaky. “Just… just need a minute.” Without another word, she pulled away from the group, slipping through the crowd with more urgency than she’d intended. She reached the edge of the dance floor, heart pounding, and paused. The air felt charged, like something was on the verge of breaking. She scanned the room once more, her gaze landing on a figure standing at the back of the bar. She couldn’t see his face, but everything about the way he stood—the posture, the air of quiet authority—was so familiar it almost made her heart stop. And there it was again—the tug. She knew it was him, even from a distance. But as she took a step toward him, the figure turned and melted back into the shadows, disappearing from her sight. Claire stopped, breathless, her heart racing as she stood frozen in the middle of the bar. The bond was unmistakable, and yet, there was no sign of him. He was here—*she knew he was*—but where? Her mind was spinning, and before she could gather herself, she heard Sarah’s voice calling her name, pulling her back to reality. Claire glanced one last time toward the shadows, but the feeling of Evan’s presence was gone, leaving her with nothing but confusion.
