Claire leaned against the railing of the balcony outside Evan’s office, staring out at the forest that stretched endlessly before her. The setting sun painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, the light filtering through the trees and casting long shadows over the pack house grounds. She took a deep breath, trying to settle the nervous energy buzzing in her chest.
The past week had been a whirlwind. After returning from vacation and making her decision to fully embrace the mate bond, she and Evan had gone public. The pack had reacted with excitement and curiosity, the news spreading like wildfire. The Alpha had found his mate. And she was a warrior, not the traditional Luna anyone had expected.
Claire couldn’t help but feel the weight of their expectations, but she was determined not to let it crush her.
The balcony door opened behind her, and she turned to see Evan stepping out. He was dressed in his usual black button-down and slacks, his sleeves rolled up to reveal the strong forearms she loved to admire. His expression softened as his gaze met hers.
“Hey,” he said, crossing the space between them.
“Hey.” Claire smiled, leaning into his touch as he slid an arm around her waist.
“You’ve been quiet today,” Evan observed, his voice gentle.
Claire sighed, resting her head against his shoulder. “Just… thinking. About everything. About the pack, the ceremony, what it all means.”
Evan pressed a kiss to her hair. “You don’t have to carry this alone, Claire. I’m here. Always.”
She tilted her head up to look at him, her heart swelling at the sincerity in his eyes. “I know. It’s just… this isn’t what I pictured for myself, you know? I’ve spent my whole life training to be a warrior, and now I’m stepping into a role I never thought I’d have. It’s a lot to process.”
Evan nodded, his thumb brushing soothing circles against her hip. “I understand. And I don’t expect you to change who you are. You’ll be my Luna, but you’ll also still be the fierce, determined warrior who fights for this pack. That’s what makes you perfect for this.”
Claire’s cheeks flushed at his words, but her lips curved into a small smile. “You always know what to say, don’t you?”
“It’s a gift,” he teased, his smirk softening the tension between them.
She laughed, the sound easing some of her nerves. “So, you’re really going through with this whole mating ceremony thing?”
Evan’s smirk grew. “Absolutely. The pack needs to see us united, and I want to officially announce you as my Luna. You deserve that recognition.”
Claire raised an eyebrow. “You mean you want an excuse to throw a big party and show me off?”
“Maybe a little,” he admitted, his grin widening. “But mostly, I want to celebrate us. And I want the pack to understand how lucky I am to have you by my side.”
Her heart softened at his words, the lingering doubts and fears melting away. “When is it?”
“Three weeks,” Evan said. “Just enough time for us to prepare, but not enough time for you to overthink everything.”
Claire rolled her eyes, though her smile remained. “You know me too well.”
“I do.” He cupped her face, his thumb brushing over her cheek. “And I know you’ll be incredible, no matter what. You were born for this, Claire.”
She leaned into his touch, her gaze locked on his. “I hope you’re right.”
“I am,” Evan said confidently. He lowered his head, brushing his lips against hers in a kiss that was both soft and reassuring.
When they pulled apart, Claire felt lighter, as though a weight had been lifted from her shoulders.
“I’ll try not to overthink it,” she promised.
Evan chuckled, his hand slipping down to intertwine with hers. “Good. Now, come on. Dinner’s ready, and if we don’t get down there soon, Sarah’s going to eat all the dessert.”
Claire laughed, letting him lead her back inside.
For the first time in a long while, she felt a sense of peace. The road ahead wouldn’t be easy, but with Evan by her side, she knew they could handle anything.
