Chapter Fourteen: The Battle Begins

1119 Words
The first clash was like thunder. Claire barely had time to brace herself before the rogue wolves surged into the clearing, their snarls breaking the stillness of the forest. Her heart thundered in her chest as she shifted into her wolf form, feeling the ground beneath her paws as the battle erupted in front of her. The adrenaline hit her like a wave, but there was no time to think—only time to act. The rogues were stronger than she expected, their coordination unnervingly tight. They moved as one, their snarls and growls mixing with the sound of snapping branches and the crunch of undergrowth. Her teeth bared as she lunged at the nearest rogue, her claws slashing across its flank. It howled in pain but retaliated with fierce strength, its jaws snapping just inches from her face. She dodged, springing back to avoid the bite, but it wasn’t just one rogue she had to contend with—it was several, attacking from all sides. She heard the sound of snarling to her left and whirled, instinct guiding her as she drove her shoulder into the chest of another rogue, sending it crashing into the trees. She fought hard, every motion sharp and purposeful, her training kicking in as she dodged, struck, and fought back with all the force she had. But even with all her years of training, the rogues were relentless. She couldn’t afford to lose focus—not even for a second. Everywhere she looked, there was chaos. Sarah was to her right, her white fur flashing in the dappled sunlight as she ripped into a rogue’s side. Claire saw one of the younger warriors, Jake, go down in a brutal flurry of claws and teeth. The rogue pinned him to the ground, its jaws closing in on his throat, but Claire didn’t hesitate. She launched herself at the rogue, sinking her teeth into its throat and yanking it off Jake. He scrambled to his feet, gasping for air. "Stay alert!" Claire growled, her voice low and filled with urgency. Jake nodded quickly, his eyes wide with fear, but he didn’t argue. He was a warrior, just like her. He would fight until the end. The bond with Evan flickered in the back of her mind. She couldn’t hear his voice—couldn’t feel him directly—but there was a comfort in knowing he was out there. *Somewhere*. She couldn’t sense exactly where he was, but she could feel his presence, a steady hum deep inside her, like an anchor in the chaos. He was alive. He was okay. And that knowledge kept her grounded in the madness. But it didn’t ease the gnawing worry in her chest. The battle was too brutal, too fierce. There were too many rogues. And every time she found herself caught up in the fight, there was a fleeting moment of panic when she realized she couldn’t see him. What if he was hurt? What if something happened to him? *Stay focused,* she told herself, shaking off the thought as she lunged into another rogue. *Stay focused, or you’ll get killed too.* A roar echoed through the clearing, and Claire’s heart skipped a beat. She spun, looking for the source, and saw a large rogue Alpha pushing through the pack. His fur was matted with blood, but he moved with undeniable authority, ripping through warriors like they were nothing. Claire’s eyes narrowed. This was the one she needed to take down. She charged, her claws bared as she collided with the rogue Alpha, their bodies crashing to the ground in a tangle of fur and muscle. He was powerful—stronger than anything she’d ever faced before. His fangs were like daggers as they snapped at her throat, and his claws raked across her flank, leaving deep gouges in her fur. Pain flared through her side, but she gritted her teeth and twisted, breaking free of his hold. She wasn’t going down like this—not today. From the corner of her eye, she caught Sarah’s form darting past, eyes locked on another rogue warrior. They were all in this together, fighting side by side. They had to win. For the pack. For their future. Suddenly, Claire felt the bond surge within her, sharp and clear. She closed her eyes for just a second, a breath of relief—*he’s okay*. Evan was still alive, still fighting. But the connection didn’t fade. It pulled at her, pulling her toward him as if the bond was trying to call her to him. She couldn’t let herself think of that right now. She had to fight. Another rogue lunged at her, and she sprang into the air, twisting mid-flight to land on top of it. Her claws found purchase on its back, and she sunk her teeth into its neck, tearing through fur and flesh. The rogue let out a gurgling cry before collapsing beneath her. But there was no time to celebrate. The fight was still raging, and she couldn’t afford to stop. Hours seemed to stretch into eternity as the battle raged on. Claire’s body ached, her muscles screaming with exhaustion, but she didn’t stop. She couldn’t stop. Not when so many were depending on her. She fought alongside Sarah, who had become a blur of graceful, lethal motion. The two of them moved as one—fighting, dodging, protecting each other like they always had. But the rogues were relentless. There were more of them than Claire had anticipated, and they were faster, stronger. She had to think quickly, and she had to be strategic. Every warrior who fell meant more pressure on the others. She couldn’t let her guard down. In the distance, she heard the sound of another wolf growling—loud and menacing. Her heart skipped again. The Alpha. The rogue Alpha had to be close. She had to find him before he found her pack. But as Claire pushed toward the sound of the growling, the bond surged again—stronger this time. Her mind snapped to Evan. He was close now. She could feel his presence like a pulse in her chest. The bond was loud and clear—*he was coming for her*. But that only made her more frantic. The battle was still raging. She couldn’t lose focus. She couldn’t let herself be distracted, not when everything was on the line. A rogue lunged at her, and Claire barely had time to react. She twisted, barely dodging the rogue’s jaws as they snapped at her. Her claws found its side, and she slashed, sending the rogue tumbling back, but it was just one of many. She couldn’t stop. Not yet.
