I whipped my head to the door at the sound of a knock.   "Hey," he said softly. "Can I come in?"   Despite myself, I found myself managing to give a small smile in the face of his friendly one. "Yeah, sure."   He came to sit beside me on the floor, neither of us saying anything. It was like that for a long time; just us two sitting on the floor; our shoulders brushing lightly as we let the silence envelope us. But it wasn't that kind of silence you'd feel the need to break.
