Chapter two

Bright light hit Lyra on her eyes. Opening her eyes, she found herself in a huge room with black and white walls. Looking down, she realized she was lying on clean sheets in a king sized bed. Scrunching her eyebrows, Lyra sat up. And the memories of the previous day came rushing in; her baby, her rejection, Liam lying she's a rogue, the accident and the stranger. Oh yes, the stranger. Lyra’s eyes scanned the room. From the masculine scent, Lyra knew she was in the strangers room. She wondered why he brought her here instead of taking her to a hospital. Maybe he didn’t trust Lyra yet to fulfill her end of the bargain of doing anything for him in response to saving her. Hearing footsteps, Lyra froze. She wasn’t yet ready to meet him. Clearing her throat, she realised it was so dry. She looked around and found a glass of water on a stool beside the bed. She drank the water and returned the cup. The door opened and the most alluring man Lyra had ever set eyes on walked into the room. He was in casuals, wearing a hooded black shirt and gray sweatpants. His hair was wet like he had just come out from the shower. And his aura was so powerful. Lyra guessed him to be an Alpha. Lyra looked down at her chapped nails. She couldn’t look into the stranger’s eyes for too long. It was intimidating and pierced her soul. “Thank you for saving me,” Lyra said in a low voice. There was silence. Looking up, Lyra found the man’s gaze traveling all over her body. And Lyra shifted on the bed. Her stomach tied in knots as her throat dried up again. Lyra heard the man hum before dragging a chair close to her bed. He sat down, crossing his legs across each other. “You said you would do anything,” he reminded Lyra of her promise. Lyra bit her lips, twisting her fingers more intently. Slowly, she brought up her head and looked into the man’s eyes. She nodded her head with her ears pecked up. “I want you to be my chosen mate,” the man announced. Lyra’s brows furrowed. She searched the man’s eyes. There wasn't any humor in it. The man was dead serious. Out of all things Lyra expected the man to say, this wasn’t it. “You don’t even know me. What if I’m a serial killer or something else?” “I did a little research on you, Lyra. So you have nothing to worry about. Besides, I know you can’t harm even a fly,” the man said, looking at Lyra, his eyes scanning her facial features. His face was passive. No emotion on it. Lyra wondered what he was thinking. Lyra thought hard and long about it. She wasn’t ready to jump into another relationship when her last one ended on a terrible note. She still had a mission to complete - taking revenge on Liam. From the corner of her eyes, Lyra looked at the man. She knew he was an alpha. But what was he thinking? No Alpha would want a random woman as his Luna. “I thought I would be a maid here or something. I’m really good at cooking, sir,” Lyra tried to dissuade the Alpha from taking her as his Luna. Lyra knew she wasn’t emotionally available at the moment. Whatever the Alpha was thinking, he had to kill it. For the life of her, Lyra couldn’t fathom why a man would want her. Especially after seeing the state she was in. “Rest well. We’ll have a proper discussion on our mating ceremony when you are healed,” The man rose up from the chair. Looking at him, Lyra found a flicker of pain flash through his eyes. But before Lyra could confirm if her eyes were playing tricks on her or not, the Alpha looked away. “I didn’t agree to it,” Lyra said, getting the man to look up at her again. But when he did, there was no emotion on his face. Lyra doubted she must have seen wrongly. “I saved your life. You said you would do… anything in return,” the man said before walking towards the door. “And call me Xander,” he continued, opened the door and left. Lyra sighed, resting her back against the bed frame. She knew she couldn’t refuse. One thing Lyra was known for, she was a woman of her words. She believes in one honoring their words. And she would be going against her principles if she rejected Xander’s offer. Lyra winced, massaging her temples. Her head was banging so badly she pushed all her worries to the back of her head. She didn’t have a choice. And it was better to stop thinking for now. Minutes later, the doors opened to reveal two maids with a tray of food. Lyra couldn’t remember the last time she was catered for. At Liam’s house, she was the one who does all the cleaning and cooking. Liam had said he didn’t need a maid since he had a wife and a mate. Liam never tells Lyra of things going on in the pack. Lyra was a Luna by name only. And her step sister, Aliyah took up most of the role mostly because she was the beta of the pack. Hours after Lyra had her meal, while she was resting, the door opened, getting Lyra out of the disturbing memories. And a girl walked in with a grimace. She bore a striking resemblance to Xander through the eyes and shape of the nose. Lyra kept the tab she was playing on. She had been playing a word game for the past two hours. It was one of Xander’s gifts to her. In less than a day of knowing Xander, Lyra realized how attentive he was to her wants and needs. He hasn’t come since the last time they spoke. But he made sure to get her things through the guards and maids. The girl walked in with a not so pleasant expression. “Xander just told me he wants you to be Luna. And I don’t approve of it!” The girl snapped as she came in front of Lyra’s bed with a hand placed on her hip. Lyra rubbed her neck while opening and closing her mouth. Why was the girl telling her? Wasn’t the girl supposed to tell Xander? Why her? After all, it was Xander’s idea. “I know the likes of you. You are a desperate gold digger who wants to elevate her status by using others,” the girl continued, with pursed lips as she eyed Lyra in contempt. Lyra decided to say something. She knew keeping mute would only aggravate the girl further. “I didn’t…” Lyra started but was interrupted by the girl. “Don’t you ever interrupt me while talking,” the girl snarled, taking a step closer to Lyra. There was a noise and the door opened. Turning sideways, Lyra saw Xander coming in. She breathed a sigh of relief under her breath. She just wanted to continue playing her game. “Carla, stop causing trouble for Lyra. She still needs to rest,” Xander reprimanded the girl called Carla with a frown on his face. The girl, Carla turned around to Xander, “She’s not fit to be your luna. She’s only here to take what doesn't belong to her,” Carla whined. Xander sighed. He walked towards the girl. Rubbing her head lovingly, he smiled, “that’s for me to worry about. When have I ever made the wrong decision?” He asked. Lyra looked at the siblings with softened gaze. She realized Carla was only protective of her brother. Her heart gave a painful pang when she remembered the relationship between her family and her. Xander whispered something to Carla. She nodded her head and walked off. But not before turning around and giving Lyra a look she couldn’t fathom. Xander walked up to Lyra, “I’m sorry about Carla. She’s not usually that way.” Lyra nodded. She understood. She looked away from Xander’s piercing gaze. Lyra couldn’t remember the last time someone sincerely apologized to her. She was always treated like thrash. Remembering the times she spent in her former pack, Lyra was filled with bitterness and hatred. Unconsciously, she fisted her hands as she stared into space. “I need to go back to my former pack,” Lyra suddenly said, turning to face Xander. She caught him staring at her. But as soon as the words left Lyra’s lips, Xander’s brows furrowed. “Why?”
