Realisation had clearly dawned for those nearest to the crash, and they’d started to abandon their vehicles in huge numbers, grabbing what they could carry from overloaded cars. And as others began to realise what was happening, they too started to follow. In no time the trickle became a flood. Pedestrians filled the gaps between cars and were herding away from the crash-zone in a fast-moving wave in both directions. It was unstoppable, not that anyone had any reason to try and slow the sudden exodus down.
