I resumed at the Sherman company a week later. Their reception was totally top class. They treated me as a guest even though I had just been offered a job. A young lady, just about my age walked up to where the chosen candidates and I sat. “We are glad to have you join our team.” The lady commented, clearing up her throat as she took a proper stance. “Many applications were sent through and believe me, picking you guys was more like finding a needle in a haystack but it had to be done regardless. So you all are welcomed.” She continued, her face beaming with a bright smile. Everyone applauded for a moment. “Now that you're part of the team, it is important to know what's required of you and how best you can stand efficiently at your various job roles. To this effect we will be holding a brief meeting which will let you in on the company values.” she added. Just then my phone rang out loud. Every attention turned to me as I scrambled through my bag for the phone. “Could you excuse us?” the lady mentioned as she walked up close to me. I nodded affirmatively, picked up my bag and walked off to the extreme of the room. As I brought out my phone, the caller ID revealed it was Ethan over the line. I sighed and was about to end the call when someone called my name. I hadn't done any proper Introduction with any of the staff so who could already know my name? “Aren't you Violet?” the voice repeated as I turned over to see who had recognized me. “I am, Good morning sir,” I greeted with a wide curtsey. “Oh you don't seem to remember me, do you?” the man asked as he studied me closely. “I'm afraid I don't” I responded, still trying to make out where I had met the man. He definitely had to be one of the board members or the CEO himself merely judging by the quality of his blazers. While I was trying to make sense of who he was, Ethan returned the call. I ignored the call, my mind mainly focused on the young boss in front. “You can take the call,” the man urged me with the motion of his hands. I nodded, walked a bit further before taking the call. “Violet, where the hell are you?!” Ethan's voice thundered against my ears. “Can you tone your voice?” I said, glancing around to make sure no one heard Ethan scream. “I said where the hell are you? Off with some dude, huh?” “Yes I went off with some dude, you wanna cry about it?. What do you need me for anyways?” “You went off with some dude? I always knew you were a cheap w***e but never expected you to be this cheap.” “Look Ethan I got no time for this. I got stuff to do,” “Don't you dare…” I hung up the call, heaved a deep sigh before returning back to where the elegant young man stood. “Everything okay?” he inquired with a curious look. I nodded, “Everything is okay, I think I do remember you now,” “You do?” “Yes I do. You're Alex, I believe we grew up in the same hood.” “Took you long enough. My God, where have you been this whole time? You look so good.” “I've been around,” I replied with a wide smile. “It's so good to see you,” Alex said, offering an embrace to which I gave in. There was a scent on him, thick and masculine like the stranger I met at the club. Could that stranger be Alex? “You're welcome to Sherman. I happen to be the CEO here so be rest assured you have nothing to get worried about.” “Thank you so much. You've really built quite an edifice to your name.” “I'm honoured,” Alex said with a smile. Shortly after I was assigned to an office but before that a meeting was held between the CEO and the newly taken staff. “I welcome you all to Sherman,” Alex said, standing to his feet as he addressed us in the room. “You all are here because you merited it. My team after careful consideration chose the best. This ability to be the best is what we expect as you join the team. Give your best and the company will reward your efforts greatly.” Alex stated. He went on to describe what we needed to know and in no time I was on my desk doing my first task as a brand and social media manager. At about noon, Alex branched to my office. “It's lunchtime, let's go grab some lunch” he offered. I obliged, closing down my system as Alex led the way out to the building. Outside the building, Alex got on a call. I stayed out in some shade before a strange man walked up to me. The stranger's clothes were torn but his gaze was kept fixed on me. I moved back, fearing he might be holding onto a weapon. The man glanced to his right and left as though he was on the run. “ You shouldn't be here, this was a totally bad idea. I need you to quit, go home and never come back.” The man said, his face frozen in a moment before he broke into a hysterical laugh while running off. Alex, who immediately noticed what was happening, dropped the call and walked up to me. “Are you good?” Alex asked. I nodded in affirmation as the strange man's voice kept echoing in my head. What could that possibly mean? Just when I was finally able to free myself from Ethan's hold, someone wanted me to quit?
