“How did you get this picture?” Alex asked, taking the phone from me.
“Keep it down, everyone is a suspect now” He said, motioning with his hands.
“I don't know, an anonymous user sent it across,” I replied, wiping up the tears that welled up my cheeks.
“Look, stop crying. You can't cry in moments like these.”
How Alex managed to maintain his cool, had me lost for words. He didn't seem to fret, maybe because I was the one that had my marriage to lose.
I just couldn't help but let the tears flow steadily.
“Someone is obviously strolling us but I need you to calm down.” Alex said, stepping in to take control.
Alex brought out his phone and scanned the whole message on mine.
“What are you doing?” I asked, leaning over with interest at what he did.
“I have a feature that can help track anonymity. It should work here.” Alex said, further directing the phone over the message.
After a moment Alex gave up. He placed his phone into his pockets and turned to me.
“Someone is behind this. What the person wants I have no idea but it can all be figured out.” Alex said, studying the board from the see through glass.
“It's so easy for you to say because you're not the one about to lose your marriage to some scandal.” I said, meeting up with his gaze.
“Oh c'mon don't start with that. You know how much this could lead to losing my company.” he continued, returning his focus on me.
“Right,”
“Look, I gotta go. I think I know someone that may have my answers.” I proposed stepping forward.
“So, you do know someone? I'll come with you then, just a safety measure.”
“No, please not now. Not with everything going on. What if my husband is the one behind it.”
“The same man that abused you? How can you defend him so much?”
“I'm not defending him,” I said, clinching my fist firmly.
I walked out from where Alex stood, determined to find anyone who could be secretly trolling me starting from Elena.
“Call me at the end of the day!” Alex called out.
I drove off from work and arrived at Elena’s place.
The compound was quiet, not a single sound could be heard when I stepped in.
She stood at the door ready to usher me in.
“Hey girl! What's good” Elena greeted, spreading out her arms as I approached the entrance to her house.
“Hey hold it up,” I said, putting up my hands between us.
Elena glared, letting out a soft giggle as she looked at me.
“So you wanna play all dirty with me huh?” I asked.
“What the hell are you yapping about” Elena returned, her countenance suddenly turning dark.
“I thought you were my best friend, a friend that'd understand all the s**t I go through but I guess none of that is applicable, huh? I mean why would you choose to have any affair with any man but Ethan, Ethan??”
Elena quickly took a step back and was about to shut down her door when I placed my legs at the door as she pushed on hard.
“Look, it was never my, in…in…tention to do any of that,” Elena stammered, her grip losing on the door.
I pushed the door harder leading to Elena scampering to the floor. She crawled off to some distance immediately after I got into the room.
“So tell me what exactly is going on here.”
“Fine, I had an affair with Ethan but it wasn't in my control. Someone else was in the picture, bigger than Ethan and I combined.”
“Haha… but you chose to meet him at the hotel. You could have called me.”
“I have no reason to lie to you. We've been friends for a very long time but I need to save you and myself. s**t was coming for both of us alike.”
I took a seat. I glanced at Elena who was already deep in tears. Who could this person be?
Then in a moment of brief thought, it hit me hard and good. What if this stronger person was uncle Jue? What were the odds?
He was always requesting that I quit my job, with a promise of a better pay. He also had a huge impact on Ethan's career and more than anything fought against my ideologies.
“Is it uncle Jue?” I asked, tenderly looking at Elena.
“I don't know at all, please I'm sorry.” Elena pleaded, her body soaked in with heat and welled up with tears.
I let out a sigh, and left Elena's place without saying another word.
I drove to the hospital, to take my monthly check up.
Ever since Ethan and I began to worry about our inability to procreate, we had made it a duty to do monthly check-ins at the hospital.
The doctor was pleased to see me, he went on and took some test samples and afterwards returned my hospital card.
“I'll come by the house tomorrow when the results are ready.” The doctor said,
I nodded, wondering why he'd do that when the results were always the same.
I had just gotten home when Alex called me. I quickly told him how things had gone with Elena.
He promised to look into the anonymous sender.
“I'll use all I can to fish the person out, you can count on me” he'd promised.
It wasn't official yet but I just knew things with Alex was about to take a whole different turn.
The next day, the doctor came over just as Ethan left to play golf with his group of friends.
The doctor dropped a file onto the table as he settled into his chair.
“I guess no changes today,” I said.
“Oh there is, fortunately.” The doctor said, pulling out some documents from the file.
He locked eyes with me, his face hidden in an untold kindness or pity.
“The test result,” he said, breathing out sharply. “ Is only but a testament that you have no issues with infertility. You're perfectly okay, not infertile.”
I gasped, my hand on my belly over the thought of being fertile this whole time.
Just then, Ethan opened up the door and walked in.
