“Well not anymore Marie, he now belongs to your sister, it's not your sister's fault, you know how men are, he choose Emily and you know we can't just lose him just for your feelings Marie.” My mother says and I can only cry bitterly at her words.
“Marie come on, stop acting like a child, do not be selfish, think about your sister and her unborn child, we are doing this for the family's sake, you also get to benefit from this once your sister is well situated in her new home.” My mother says, I give her no reply, I only just gather myself and head back up the stairs.
They are only doing this because they love me, they love me, they love me, they are my family, no one else can love me like my family does, not even Richard. My mother did not mean anything by her words.
I go to bed bed that night, feeling drained and heavy without repair.
†††††††
The next week I avoid my entire family as much as I can, I focus all my entire energy into continuing my search for a decent job, I used up all my savings from college to get that recipe for Richard.
I head to check my email hoping to find some sort of good news. Miracles never work out well with me, my only special ability is to remain hopeful so when I find an email informing me to come for an interview, my heart gets swollen with joy.
“Mom!! Mom!!” I yell happily hurrying down the stairs to share my exciting news.
“Marie? What's going on?” My father asks but I look past him to my mother.
The smile on my face fades when my eyes calculates everyone in the room, my sister Emily and her boyfriend, my ex boyfriend Richard seats right across my mother.
“Well? Out with it now, Marie. We were having a good conversation before you interrupted it.” My mother says irritated and I force the smile back upon my face, now feeling ashamed of the good news I just got.
“I got a job.” I announce with an awkward chuckle.
“Oh really?” My mother asks now giving me her full attention.
“Yes, at the Monteiro estate.” I tell her.
“What? You got a job in the Monteiro estate.” Emily screeches and I turn to her confused.
“Yes, I did this morning.” I say my excitement returning.
“You are going to work for Ivan Monteiro?” Emily asks looking appalled.
“Yes, I guess, I'm going to be his personal maid and caregiver.” I tell my mother.
“That's good news.” My father applauds.
“You will work as someone's maid? I guess I would expect no less from you.” Emily says and I frown.
“That is great news Marie, I only hope you do not mess it.” My mother says with a tiny curl of lips.
I eagerly nod, my mother rarely offers me those little smiles unless on special occasions, she must really like that I got a job in the Monteiro estate.
“Well, is that all? I hope you understand who the Monteiro’s are, do not go over there and do something silly and embarrass yourself, the job of a maid should not be so hard, you should know it really well by now.” My mother says with a small smile and Emily let's out a dark chuckle.
“Tessa, let it go.” My father says, I curl my lips and run back the stairs.
I will not let them ruin my excitement for this job, I quickly shower, get dressed and go through the back door, I have my interview by 12pm. If they are running an interview for the job of a maid, this must really be big.
I get my answer the moment I reach the location of the address I was given. The house is gigantic fortress, it's more like a castle.
The security let's me in and I'm directed to the house.
“So you say you have experience with caregiving?” Mrs. Leah, the cool head maid who I just met asks inquisitively.
“Yes ma'am, I did a few volunteer jobs at a hospital and orphanages.” I say nervously.
“Mr. Ivan can be difficult, the man is like a son to me but I will have to tell you that he will make your life hell and hard. You match the requirements for this job specifically but you look too soft for this job, I need to know you won't go running off after a few days. Mr. Ivan is a lot to take in but once you digest who he is, and he gets comfortable with you, it gets easy. He may even grow to like you.” The woman says with a soft smile like she did not just try to scare me away seconds ago.
“As a person I mean, I already like you. So, do you still want the job?” She asks me now looking stressed out.
“Of course Ma'am, I have had to deal with a lot of difficult people in my life and line of work, I'm certain I can handle it.” I say trying to sound confident.
It couldn't be that bad anyway, what could be more bad than tolerating my sister and mother, or even all the kids I've had to babysit for money.
“Good. You are to move in tomorrow and start basic training on how to always attend to Mr. Ivan. You are aware this is a move in job right? You can only go back home during the weekends. Mr. Ivan needs you beside him at all times.” The woman makes sure to state clearly.
Although I'm very curious as to why a grown man would need a personal maid and caregiver bugging his personal space at all times, I do not dare to ask.
