4. Her Plan All Along

1694 Words
Juno ~ The women led me out of the palace and I noticed a carriage waiting for me. Before I entered it, I took one last look around and my eyes caught red hair Identical to mine, but a little bit longer. My mysterious ‘twin’ was looking at me among other servants and slaves who had gathered to watch my departure. Her eyes mirrored mine and in the light of the sun, our resemblance was even more vivid. She was quick to look away from me and disappear into the small crowd behind. “Wait!” I called out as I moved to run after her. “Is something the matter?” a guard asked as he stepped in front of me, halting my movement. “Just give me a moment please, I have to speak to her,” I pleaded. “There is no time for that, slave,” the guard told me. I was tempted to say f**k it, punch him in the nose and run after her to get some answers. But that would mean f*****g everything up for my personal interests. But was there even anything f**k up anymore? I finally let out a sigh and entered into the carriage. Gertrude was already waiting within it and she offered me her now familiar sad smile. “Wait a minute!” a shrill feminine voice called out from outside just before the carriage moved and the unknown woman joined us in the carriage. She was a beauty with blonde hair and icy blue eyes. She crossed one leg over the other as though she owned the carriage. “Well, this is unexpected,” Gertrude said with a small nervous smile that made me even more curious about who the new woman was. “Oh come on Ger, your old age must be getting to your memory now,” the woman said, “you know this is the only time I get to see him every century, I wouldn't miss it for the world.” By him, I assumed she meant the dragon. “And who might you be?” I asked before I could stop myself. Her eyes darted to me and she looked at me from head to toe as though she could not believe I had just asked her a question. I instantly knew I didn't like her and in her eyes was an emotion I knew all too well… jealousy. Although she did a good job at hiding it. For some reason, this woman was jealous of someone who was chosen to die as a sacrifice. “Who I am does not matter to you, slave. But I will tell you anyway,” she started. “I am Sloane, Vaegor’s best friend,” the girl flipped her hair as though she was trying to show me just how healthy her hair was compared to mine. Who even was Vaegor? Was that the Dragon King’s name perhaps? “Isn’t his best friend Armand?” Gertrude asked and the look Sloane gave her could have melted steel. I knew Armand was the name of the Lycan king, however I never knew the dragon King was called Vaegor. And this woman claimed to be his best friend? Who would even want to be friends with such a cruel male? The elderly woman was quick to correct herself, “of course, they never really got along that well, pardon my insolence.” That caused Sloane to smile contentedly and turn her striking eyes to me, her eyes practically caressed my chest area before they darted up to meet mine. I felt exposed and utterly irritated, just like I'm sure she wanted. The rest of the carriage ride was very awkward and I wanted to be anywhere but there. “Goodbye, slave girl,” Sloane said suddenly with a small wicked smile on her face and as though obeying her words, the carriage came to a halt. The doors were opened and I stepped out to see the largest mountain I had ever seen in my life. It was so tall that I could not even see the top from where I stood. It was a large mass of moon coloured stone with a cavernous opening in the middle that was at least thirty feet high and half as wide. “Remember what I told you,” Gertrude said behind me, she was still in the carriage as though she was scared what was within the cave would get her if she descended. “As you come to the end of your life, may the goddess guide you to a peaceful eternity,” the woman prayed before I stepped toward the dark entrance of the cave. The goddess had abandoned me. I was merely a pawn in her game, and when this beast ate me, she would easily replace me with someone who was much more competent, someone who wouldn't screw everything up and actually complete her mission. I could risk it all and run away, I was skilled enough to pull off an escape from this place. I could flee Edoril and sail back to the Coral Isles where nobody would be able to find me, nobody here knew I was a Siren after all. Yet a part of me was still deeply loyal to the goddess, that part of me knew I would give my life for this mission if it came to that. I could not run away from it… if she wished for me to die here today, then so be it. I would die for her, that was how deep my loyalty went… I would never willingly do anything to disobey the goddess. As I stepped into the cavernous opening of the cave, silence enveloped me along with an addictve smell of smoke and it was as though I had entered into another world. The silence, however, was broken by the sound of heavy chains moving, as though something… something large had been awoken from slumber. When my eyes adjusted to the darkness, the first thing I saw was a pair of orange eyes and… scales, so many scales. The beast was much closer than I thought. I had never seen a dragon before, yet I knew this one was nowhere near what a normal dragon should look like. I could see a creature like this being worshipped in the days of old. That was why he was called the demigod king by some. My eyes suddenly caught a purple glow on what I assumed was the shoulder of the beast. What. The— Just then, the glow took the form of a sigil my eyes widened and my mouth fell open agape when I realized what it was. A few days after the birth of a female siren, a unique sigil was burnt into her skin, mine was on my belly, but it was visible only to the eyes of my mate. An identical sigil on the body of any male would mark him as mine. So why then did this beast have my sigil? Could it be? No, that was not possible… he couldn't be my mate. He stepped forward and each footstep echoed through the dark cave like a mountain moving. His head lowered and a cold sweat broke out on my back, and my fingers shook as I reached out to touch him. It was as though my body was terrified to the bones yet my mind wasn't. As he came closer, his eyes resembled two pools of swirling lava, I could see the intelligence in those eyes as they assessed me closely. My shaky fingers reached out and touched the scaly horned nose of the beast and the moment my skin made contact with his. My entire world stopped rotating. There was a heavy silence and then— A deafening roar erupted from him, so loud that I fell to my knees and pressed my hands over my ears to dim it to no avail. The entire cave shook and the realization that this cave was located under thousands of pounds of rock was not helping matters. It felt as though the place might cave in, rocks fell and one nearly crushed my legs but I was quick enough to dodge it. I had no idea what was going on… was this supposed to happen? Maybe I was not meant to touch the dragon, I did not heed Gertrude’s warnings and now I had pissed the dragon off and ruined everything. When it was finally over, the entire place was filled with the dust of fallen rocks and it made it almost impossible to see. But slowly, I rose to my feet and stepped forward. It did not take me long to realize that the mighty dragon was suddenly nowhere to be found. I was stunned out of my mind and I did not hesitate to look around in search of it. Instead, my eyes caught a male figure on the debris of the floor. My jaw dropped and I gasped in utter shock. What the… He was completely naked, and even in the darkness, I could see that he had the most magnificently formed muscles I had ever seen … not that I had seen much in my sheltered life though. His hair was completely white, not a single strand of black… that was unheard of… just how powerful was he? On his strongly broad shoulder, my sigil stood proud… it was undeniably indisputable, this male was mine. But this was not supposed to happen. I took a step closer to him and then— “Hey! Stay back,” I heard an authoritative voice behind me. I turned to see a couple of shocked soldiers at the mouth of the cave. They stood frozen as they assessed the scene. It was as though they had just witnessed the most outstanding spectacle of their lives. Then, the silence was broken when one of them cried, “Inform the people, that the Dragon King has returned!” And in that moment, it all made sense, this was the goddess’s plan all along.
