The Man At The Door

1292 Words
Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. The voice from the porch echoed through the house. My name is Thomas Bennett. Izzy's heart nearly stopped. Gabriel looked like he might pass out. The photograph slipped from her fingers and landed softly on the floor. No. This couldn't be happening. Not again. Not another secret. Not another person. Adrian slowly turned toward her. "You don't have to answer the door." She looked at him. Her eyes were wide with shock. "But what if…" She couldn't finish the sentence. Because what if? What if this man was her father? What if he wasn't? What if opening that door changed everything? Again. Another knock. Then— "I know this is a strange time." The man's voice sounded nervous. "I just…" A pause. "I need to speak with Izzy Carter." Silence. Gabriel looked pale. "He knows your name." That wasn't comforting. At all. Another pause. Then the man spoke again. "Please." Something about that single word made her chest ache. He sounded tired. Sad. Almost… hopeful. Adrian looked at Marco. "Check the windows." Marco nodded and moved immediately. A moment later, he returned. "He's alone." Silence. "No vehicle?" "Old pickup truck." "No weapons?" Marco shook his head. "He looks terrified." Luca frowned. "Why does everyone who comes here lately look terrified?" No one answered. Because it was a valid question. Adrian looked back at Izzy. The choice was hers. She could see it in his eyes. He wouldn't force her. No matter what he thought. No matter what he wanted. A long silence followed. Then— "I want to see him." Her voice was barely above a whisper. Adrian nodded once. "Okay." He stepped toward the door. She followed. Gabriel stayed close beside her. Rosa looked like she was about to cry. Luca looked fascinated. Marco looked concerned. Nobody was prepared for this. Not even a little. Adrian slowly opened the door. A man stood on the porch. Mid-fifties. Dark hair touched with gray. Broad shoulders. Worn jeans. Tired blue eyes. The moment he saw Izzy… He froze. Completely. The color drained from his face. "Oh." Silence. "Oh my God." His eyes immediately filled with tears. He looked at her like she'd stepped out of a dream. Or a memory. He took one shaky step forward. Then stopped himself. "You look just like her." The words sent a chill through Izzy. Her mother. He meant her mother. "You knew my mom." It wasn't a question. A tear slipped down his cheek. "More than anyone." Silence. She looked at him. Really looked at him. And suddenly… She saw it. The same eyes. The same shape of his face. The same chin. The resemblance hit her all at once. Her knees nearly gave out. "Oh my God." The man let out a broken laugh. "I've wanted to meet you for so long." Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. Finally— "Who are you?" she whispered. The man's eyes filled with pain. "My name is Thomas Bennett." A pause. "And I think…" His voice broke. "I think I'm your father." Silence. Utter silence. The world seemed to stop spinning. Izzy couldn't breathe. Gabriel looked equally stunned. Rosa covered her mouth. Luca whispered a curse. Marco looked toward Adrian. Adrian looked like he wanted to punch something. Not because he was angry. Because he could see the pain on her face. And he hated it. A lot. "No." The word slipped from her lips. Thomas's face fell. "No?" "I don't understand." Tears filled her eyes. "I don't understand any of this." He nodded slowly. "I know." "No, you don't." Her voice cracked. "My father died four days ago." Silence. "I found out my mother was a Moretti two days ago." A tear slid down her cheek. "I found out I have a brother yesterday." Another tear followed. "And now…" She looked at him. "...you're standing on my porch telling me you're my father?" The man's eyes filled with tears. "I'm sorry." That phrase again. Everyone kept apologizing. And somehow it never made anything better. She looked at him. Then at the photograph in her hand. Then back at him. "Why now?" Silence. Then— "Because I didn't know you were alive." The room went completely still. "What?" He swallowed hard. "Your mother told me you died." Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. The color drained from Izzy's face. "No." Tears streamed down his cheeks. "She said both of you died." Both. Her and Gabriel. "Oh my God." He nodded. "I believed her." Silence. "I mourned you." The words shattered something inside her. "I buried empty coffins." A sob escaped Rosa. Even Marco looked emotional. Thomas looked broken. "For twenty years, I thought I'd lost my family." The room was quiet. Then— "Why would my mother do that?" His expression became sad. "To protect you." Of course. Always protection. Always secrets. Always lies. "From what?" He looked at Adrian. Then back at her. "The Morettis." Silence. "I wasn't supposed to know who they were." The room went cold. "You knew?" "I found out after Eleanor and I fell in love." His voice softened at her mother's name. "We met at the bookstore." A small smile appeared. "She loved books." Tears filled Izzy's eyes. "She did." He nodded. "She told me she came from a dangerous family." A pause. "But she wanted a different life." Silence. "We got married in secret." Everyone froze. "What?" He looked surprised. "You didn't know that either?" Apparently nobody knew anything. "I thought Raymond was her husband." Thomas shook his head. "No." The room went completely still. "Raymond was my best friend." Silence. "He helped us hide." Everything stopped. "Wait…" Gabriel whispered. Thomas looked at him. "You know who I am?" A soft smile appeared. "I'd know my son anywhere." Gabriel's eyes immediately filled with tears. "I looked for you too." The words broke him. Completely. Thomas started crying. "I never stopped." Gabriel crossed the porch in two steps and hugged him. The older man held on like he was afraid to let go. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "I'm so sorry." Gabriel cried harder. The sight made tears fill Izzy's eyes too. This family had spent twenty years apart. Twenty years believing lies. Twenty years missing each other. Finally, Thomas looked up at her. His eyes were red. Hopeful. Terrified. "I know I don't deserve anything." Silence. "But…" His voice broke. "Can I hug my daughter?" The question shattered her. Because he looked so afraid she'd say no. A long silence followed. Then— Slowly… She nodded. A sob escaped him. He stepped forward carefully. As though she might disappear. Then he wrapped his arms around her. And she froze. This man. This stranger. Her father. Then— She hugged him back. He started crying immediately. "I thought you were gone." Her own tears spilled over. "I thought I'd never meet you." She closed her eyes. For the first time in years… She felt something she hadn't expected. Not certainty. Not answers. But… Family. A real one. One she never knew existed. Finally, Thomas pulled back. He looked at her. Then smiled through his tears. "You have your mother's smile." She laughed softly. Everyone seemed to say that. Then his expression changed. Became serious. "I didn't come here just to meet you." The mood shifted instantly. Adrian stepped forward. "What happened?" Thomas looked toward him. "They know." Silence. "Who?" "The Morettis." Everyone froze. "They know where she is." A chill swept through the room. "And they're coming." The room went silent. Then Thomas delivered the words that made everyone's blood run cold. "By tomorrow morning…" He looked directly at Izzy. "...every member of the Moretti family will know she exists." And suddenly… The race for the truth had become a race for survival.
