The Key To The Truth

1336 Words
No one spoke. The room was completely silent. A key. Somewhere in Blackridge, her mother had hidden a key. And somehow, that key could explain everything. Izzy stared at Rosa. "You know where it is?" Rosa looked apologetic. "I know where she hid it." "You know where it is," Adrian corrected. "Technically." Luca groaned. "She's doing the thing again." "What thing?" Izzy asked. "Answering questions without actually answering them." Rosa looked offended. "I answer plenty of questions." "No, you really don't." Marco nodded. "It's actually impressive." She ignored them. Izzy leaned forward. "Please." The single word softened Rosa's expression. "Your mother trusted very few people." A pause. "But she trusted me." "Then why didn't you tell me any of this before?" Tears filled the older woman's eyes. "Because I promised her I wouldn't." Silence. "She said if anything happened to her, I was to wait." "Wait for what?" Rosa looked directly at her. "For you." The room seemed to stop. "Me?" "You were only eight years old when she died." A sad smile appeared. "Far too young to carry secrets like these." Izzy swallowed hard. "So she wanted me to find it when I was older." "Yes." "Why now?" Rosa's expression darkened. "Because people are already dying for it." No one argued. Because it was true. A file had been stolen. The mansion had been attacked. Adrian had taken a bullet. All because of something hidden twenty years ago. "What exactly is in this ledger?" she asked. Rosa sighed. "I don't know." Everyone blinked. "You don't know?" Adrian repeated. "No." "Then why is everyone trying to get it?" "Because Eleanor believed it could destroy the Morettis." Silence. Luca looked horrified. "Oh." Marco looked equally concerned. "Oh." Izzy frowned. "Why are you both saying 'oh' like that?" Luca looked at her. "Because if your mother was right…" A pause. "...that ledger could bring down an entire crime family." The room fell silent again. She suddenly wished she hadn't asked. "So… no pressure." "No pressure at all," Marco agreed. She glared at him. He had the decency to look slightly guilty. Slightly. Adrian looked at Rosa. "Where is the key?" The older woman took a deep breath. Then smiled softly. "In your old bedroom." Everyone looked at Izzy. "My bedroom?" Rosa nodded. "Your mother hid it there." "I've been in that room a hundred times." "I know." "I never found anything." "You weren't supposed to." Silence. Luca frowned. "Now I'm intrigued." "You usually are," Marco muttered. "It's one of my defining qualities." Adrian stood slowly from the bed. Immediately, everyone looked at him. "No." He blinked. "No?" he repeated. "You were shot yesterday." "I'm aware." "You aren't going anywhere." A small smile appeared. "You're bossy." "You got shot." "I've noticed." She crossed her arms. He looked entirely too amused. "You need rest." "And you need protection." "I have protection." He looked around the room. "Do you?" She sighed. He had a point. A very annoying point. "I'm going with you," he said. "No." "Yes." "No." A smile tugged at his lips. "You're adorable when you're worried." Every person in the room went silent. So did she. Because— Was she worried? Yes. Very. Apparently, everyone else noticed too. Luca slowly looked at Marco. Marco looked at the ceiling. Rosa looked delighted. This was a nightmare. "I am not adorable." "You are." "No." "Yes." She narrowed her eyes. He smiled. Unfortunately… It looked good on him. Far too good. She looked away. "Fine." His smile widened. "But you're staying in the car." That smile disappeared. "No." She folded her arms. "See? Not so fun when someone else says it." Luca snorted. Marco coughed to hide a laugh. Adrian looked betrayed. "You've been spending too much time with me." "Maybe." A few hours later, they were on the road. Against her better judgment. Against everyone else's better judgment. Against the doctor's advice. Adrian sat beside her in the back of the SUV. Marco drove. Luca sat in the passenger seat. The atmosphere was strangely normal considering they were on a secret mission to retrieve evidence that could destroy a crime family. "You know," Luca said, "my Tuesday is usually much less exciting." "It's Wednesday," Marco said. Luca frowned. "Is it?" "Yes." "Oh." Silence. "I've lost track of time." "I think we all have," Izzy said. A soft laugh came from beside her. She looked over. Adrian looked tired. Very tired. "You should be sleeping." "And miss this?" She stared at him. "You're ridiculous." "So I've been told." She smiled despite herself. The car slowly pulled into Blackridge. Her stomach tightened. Everything looked the same. The old diner. The church. The hardware store. But nothing felt the same anymore. Her entire life had changed. They finally stopped in front of her childhood home. The broken front door had been boarded up. The house looked lonely. Sad. She suddenly missed her father. It hit her without warning. A sharp ache in her chest. Adrian noticed immediately. "You okay?" She nodded. Then shook her head. "Not really." His expression softened. "I know." No. He probably did. Because he knew what it was like to lose people. He understood grief. More than she realized. They climbed out of the SUV. Marco and Luca immediately spread out, checking the property. "Clear," Marco called. The four of them entered the house. Dust floated through the sunlight. Everything felt frozen. Rosa walked slowly through the living room. She smiled sadly. "Your mother loved this house." Tears threatened again. "She planted those flowers outside herself." Izzy looked toward the window. The flowerbeds had long since died. Still… She could almost picture it. Her mother laughing. Working in the garden. Being alive. Rosa squeezed her hand. Then she looked upstairs. "It's there." Silence. "In your room." The walk upstairs felt surreal. Her old bedroom looked exactly as she'd left it. The stuffed bear still sat on the bed. The faded posters still hung on the walls. Rosa walked directly to the bookshelf. She smiled. "Of course." "What?" Izzy asked. "Your mother always did love books." She reached toward the shelf and pulled out an old copy of The Secret Garden. Nothing happened. Then she pressed something inside the shelf. A click echoed through the room. Everyone froze. Slowly… A small compartment opened in the wall. Izzy's breath caught. Inside sat a tiny wooden box. Covered in dust. Untouched for twenty years. No one moved. No one breathed. Rosa looked at her. "She left this for you." With trembling hands, Izzy stepped forward. She picked up the box. It felt heavier than it looked. Her fingers shook. "Open it," Luca whispered. She slowly lifted the lid. Inside was a silver key. And a folded letter. Tears immediately filled her eyes. Because she recognized the handwriting. Her mother's. With shaking hands, she unfolded the paper. The room became completely silent. The letter read: My dearest Izzy, If you're reading this, then I wasn't able to tell you the truth myself. A tear slipped down her cheek. First, know this: none of what happened was your fault. I loved you every day of my life, and every choice I made was to protect you. More tears followed. The key you're holding unlocks a safety deposit box at Blackridge Savings Bank. Inside is the truth about our family, the Morettis, and why I ran. Her breathing became uneven. If you've found this, then you're in danger. Trust Adrian DeLuca. He is one of the few people I know who will protect you, even when it costs him everything. She stopped. Looked up. Adrian looked stunned. She looked back down. And one last thing, my sweet girl… A tear landed on the paper. There is something I never told anyone. The room seemed to stop. Your father wasn't the only one who kept secrets. Silence. Then— You have a brother. The letter slipped from her fingers. No one moved. No one breathed. Because somehow… Everything they thought they knew had just changed. Again.
