Project Titan

Chapter 6: Project Titan A cold wind swept across the overlook as Ava watched the lights of Geneva shimmer beneath the night sky. The city's beauty felt deceptive now. Somewhere among those streets, someone had spent years watching her, studying her work, and manipulating events from the shadows. Damien broke the silence. "You're thinking about leaving." Ava glanced at him. "You seem very certain." "If you stay where you are, they'll keep coming after you. If you run, they'll follow. Neither option solves the problem." "And your solution?" "Find them before they find what they're looking for." She studied him carefully. "You say that like you've done this before." A faint shadow crossed his face. "My father built Blackwood Motors from almost nothing. Twenty years ago, someone tried to destroy the company from the inside. I learned early that corporate wars aren't fought only in boardrooms." Ava noticed something different in his voice. It wasn't confidence. It was experience. Before she could ask another question, Damien's phone vibrated. He read the message once. His expression hardened. "We have to leave." "What happened?" "Another attack." --- At Blackwood Motors headquarters, the executive security team had gathered in the operations center. A massive digital map displayed facilities across Europe. One location flashed red. "Our autonomous testing facility outside Zurich was breached thirty minutes ago," Damien's security chief explained. "What was taken?" Damien asked. "Nothing." Ava frowned. "Then why attack it?" The security chief zoomed in on surveillance footage. Three masked intruders entered the building. They ignored the prototype vehicles. Ignored the servers. Instead, they photographed the layout of the research laboratories before leaving. "They weren't stealing," Ava murmured. "They were collecting information." "Exactly," Damien replied. "But information for what?" Nobody answered. --- The following morning, Titan Automotive tightened its security. Every employee received a new identification badge. Biometric scanners replaced standard key cards. Visitors were suspended indefinitely. Victor Hensley addressed the engineering division. "Until further notice, all research will be conducted offline. No external storage devices. No personal laptops. Every department will operate under enhanced security protocols." The announcement unsettled the staff. People whispered as they returned to their desks. Rumors spread quickly. Some believed a rival company was responsible. Others feared government involvement. Ava believed neither. The attacks were too precise. Too personal. --- Liam Foster entered her office carrying a sealed evidence box. "I've finished analyzing the hidden files." "And?" "There were encrypted fragments we couldn't read before." He placed several printed photographs on her desk. Each one showed different automotive research centers around Europe. Blackwood Motors. De Luca Performance. König Automotive. Titan Automotive. Every major manufacturer connected to cutting-edge electric propulsion appeared on the list. Someone had been investigating them all. "This isn't about one company," Ava said quietly. "No." "It's about the entire industry." Liam nodded. "And there's something else." He unfolded another document. It was a personnel chart. Professor Daniel Mercer's name appeared near the top. Beneath it were several engineers from different companies. Including Ava. "What is this?" "I don't know," Liam admitted. "But every person on this list has worked on advanced battery technology." Ava felt her pulse quicken. "My professor..." "...may have been part of something much larger than anyone realized." --- Across town, Matteo De Luca sat in a private meeting with Adrian König. Normally, the two men avoided each other whenever possible. Today, circumstances had changed. Matteo poured two cups of espresso. "I never thought we'd willingly sit at the same table." Adrian remained expressionless. "I don't intend to make a habit of it." Matteo slid a folder across the table. "My investigators found shell companies linked to Orion Dynamics." Adrian opened it. "They've acquired mining interests in three countries." "They're buying lithium." "Cobalt." "Rare earth processing facilities." Adrian looked up. "They're controlling the supply chain." "Exactly." Neither man spoke for several moments. Finally, Matteo asked the question both had been avoiding. "If Orion succeeds..." "They won't need to compete with manufacturers." "They'll own them." --- Meanwhile, Ava decided to visit the university where Professor Mercer had once taught. The engineering department looked much the same as she remembered. Old brick buildings. Workshops filled with half-finished student projects. The familiar smell of machine oil and metal. Professor Helen Strauss greeted her warmly. "Ava. It's been years." "It's good to see you." They spoke briefly before Ava asked the question weighing on her mind. "Did Professor Mercer ever mention a project called Titan?" Helen's smile disappeared. "Where did you hear that name?" "So it was real." Helen looked toward the office door before quietly closing it. "Daniel never spoke openly about it." "But?" "He believed the future of transportation depended on a breakthrough that could change everything." "What kind of breakthrough?" "He wouldn't say." "Why not?" "He thought someone was listening." A chill ran through Ava. "Did you believe him?" "I thought he was becoming paranoid." Helen hesitated. "Until he disappeared." --- As Ava left the university, she noticed the same gray SUV parked across the street that she had seen outside Titan headquarters two days earlier. Its windows were heavily tinted. The engine started. The vehicle pulled away slowly. She memorized the license plate. By the time she called local authorities, the number belonged to a rental company. Another dead end. --- That evening, Damien invited Ava to Blackwood Motors' private proving ground. "I want to show you something," he said. The facility stretched across rolling hills outside the city. High-speed tracks curved through forests and open fields. Inside a secured hangar stood a sleek prototype unlike anything Ava had seen. "It isn't finished," Damien explained. "But it uses an experimental energy management system." Ava walked around the vehicle slowly. "This architecture..." She stopped. "It's similar to Professor Mercer's research." Damien nodded. "My father funded part of his work years ago." "You knew him?" "I met him twice." "Why didn't you tell me?" "Because I didn't know how deeply you were connected until now." Ava looked at the unfinished prototype. "This isn't a coincidence." "No." "It never was." Before either of them could continue, alarms echoed through the hangar. Red emergency lights began flashing. A security officer ran inside. "Sir!" "What is it?" "We've detected unauthorized drones approaching the facility." The room instantly shifted into controlled urgency. Engineers shut down equipment. Security personnel locked reinforced doors. Through the hangar windows, several small lights appeared against the darkening sky. "They're not hobby drones," Damien said. "How can you tell?" "They're flying in formation." The first drone reached the perimeter fence. Then another. Then a third. Instead of exploding or crashing, each hovered over a different section of the proving ground. Moments later, every monitor inside the facility flickered. The screens filled with the same message. PROJECT TITAN CANNOT BE STOPPED. Then the display changed again. A countdown appeared. 05:00 No one in the room knew what would happen when the timer reached zero. The only certainty was that whoever controlled Project Titan had just demonstrated they could reach even the most secure automotive facilities in Europe—and the next move would determine whether this was still a corporate conspiracy or something far more dangerous.
