The First Move

Chapter 3: The First Move Blue emergency lights flashed across the glass walls of Titan Automotive Group as investigators sealed off the design studio. Ava stood just outside the lab, arms folded tightly against the cold. The room she had spent years working in now looked like a crime scene. Empty drive bays, overturned cabinets, and missing servers told the same story: this wasn't random vandalism. Someone had known exactly what to take. A detective approached her with a notepad. "Ms. Morgan, was anyone besides your team aware that the prototype files were stored here?" "Only senior executives and a handful of engineers." "So whoever did this likely had inside information." The words settled heavily in her mind. An insider. --- By sunrise, news of the break-in had spread through the automotive industry. Stock prices shifted. Investors demanded answers. Rival companies denied any involvement. Inside Titan's boardroom, Chairman Victor Hensley addressed the executive team. "Until we know who leaked our security protocols, no one leaves this building without authorization." Uneasy glances passed around the table. Someone in the room could have betrayed them. --- Across the city, Damien Blackwood read the breaking news on a tablet. His chief of security entered. "Our intelligence confirms the theft." Damien looked up. "Did we lose any people?" "No." "Good." "And Ms. Morgan?" "Unharmed." Damien closed the tablet. "Keep it that way." --- Meanwhile, Matteo De Luca paced his office. "This theft is too clean," he muttered. His legal adviser frowned. "You think one of the competitors is responsible?" "I think someone wants all of us blaming each other." He looked toward the city skyline. "And while we fight... they'll disappear with the technology." --- Adrian König reviewed surveillance photos from the expo. He stopped at a single image. A maintenance worker in the background wore the wrong company badge. "Enhance this." His analyst zoomed in. The badge was counterfeit. Adrian's expression hardened. "They were watching her before the break-in." --- Later that afternoon, Ava returned to her office to collect a few personal belongings. Most employees had already left, leaving the corridors unusually quiet. She found a small package on her desk. There was no sender's name. Inside was a miniature model of the Apex X. Attached to it was a handwritten note. > Some ideas are worth stealing. Others are worth killing for. Be careful who you trust. Ava's pulse quickened. She immediately called building security. By the time officers reviewed the entrance cameras, whoever had delivered the package was gone. --- That evening, rain fell steadily over the city. Ava left the headquarters through a side exit, hoping to avoid reporters gathered at the front. As she reached the parking area, she noticed a black luxury sedan waiting nearby. Its window lowered. Damien Blackwood sat inside. "I'm not here to recruit you," he said evenly. "Then why are you here?" "Because someone has escalated this beyond business." "I can handle myself." "I don't doubt that." He paused before adding, "But whoever stole your research isn't finished." Ava studied him carefully. "Why should I believe you?" "Because if I wanted your designs, I wouldn't steal them." For a long moment, neither spoke. Then Damien handed her a sealed envelope. "Open it after I leave." The sedan pulled away into the rain. When Ava finally opened the envelope, she found a single photograph. It showed a man leaving Titan's headquarters on the night of the theft. The man's face was partially visible. To Ava's shock, she recognized him. He wasn't a stranger. He was one of Titan Automotive's own senior engineers. The theft had come from inside the company—and the conspiracy was only beginning.
