I WOKE UP because of the hot sunlight creeping through the curtains, even though the glass window was thick, causing me to slowly close my eyes. My eyelids still felt so heavy. Well, how could they not, when I barely got any sleep all night? Who could sleep soundly after that crazy dream about Daddy Matthew? I smiled.
Damn it... Why is he so handsome, even in my dreams?
"Adel?"
I looked at the door following the voice, and right after a soft knock, the guest room door slowly opened. Marky walked in, already wearing a pressed white dress shirt and black slacks. A hospital ID was hanging around his neck, and he was clearly ready to leave.
"Good morning, sleepyhead," he greeted with a laugh.
I just grunted softly before burying my face deeper into the pillow.
"It's late, babe, we still have duty."
"I'm just a nurse intern today anyway," I answered, annoyed. I didn't want to go in; I just wanted to stay here in their mansion all day.
"Adel—"
"I'm feeling lazy!" I cut him off.
He laughed and sat on the edge of the bed. "You can't be lazy today."
"Why not?"
"Because Dad went to work early, and he knows we're both interns, especially you."
It felt like a bucket of cold water was poured over my head.
"What?!" I sat up instantly.
"Daddy Matthew already went to work?"
Marky frowned. "Daddy Matthew?"
"I mean... Dr. Fraser. And of course, he's going to be my daddy once we get married, right? So I might as well get used to it now," I explained sweetly. Before he could notice anything, I stood on my tiptoes and kissed Marky.
"Yeah," he replied with a smile, kissing me back. But as I closed my eyes, memories of Matthew by the pool area rushed into my mind. I immediately pulled away and just smiled at Marky. He didn't notice a single thing and adjusted his watch.
"Wait, why is he going to the hospital? Does he have surgery?"
"No. He has an executive meeting first this morning, then he'll do rounds in different departments. He might pass by the nursing department later."
My eyes widened. Executive meeting... nursing department...
My heart automatically beats faster.
"What time?"
"Early."
"s**t!"
I almost fell off the bed as I rushed to stand up.
Marky scratched the back of his neck, laughing.
"I thought you were feeling lazy?"
"U-uh... I just remembered it would be embarrassing to be late or absent, especially since he's your dad, right? He might think I only got into your hospital because of you."
"Good girl." He smiled and kissed my forehead.
"I have to leave now. I can't drop you off because Dad is waiting for me. Take care, okay?"
I just nodded, even though almost nothing was registering in my mind anymore. Once the door closed, I ran to the window and saw his car pulling out of the garage.
I sighed. So Daddy Matthew had already left, too.
What a waste. I was actually planning to have breakfast with him.
I showered quickly as soon as I got home. After that, I stood in front of the mirror for almost an hour. I lost count of how many times I changed my outfit.
"Ma'am Adel?" Nanny Ising called from outside.
"Yes?"
"Aren't you going to eat first?"
"No, thanks, Nanny!"
"Not even a slice of bread?"
"No need, I'll just eat at the cafeteria."
I put on light makeup to make my skin look fresh and smooth. I tied my long hair into a clean ponytail—simple, but still elegant. I also made sure my nursing uniform fit perfectly: not too tight, not too loose, just right enough to get noticed.
After spraying my perfume, I smiled at my reflection.
"Good luck to you, Dr. Fraser."
However, I almost swore out loud when I checked the time on the car dashboard.
"s**t!"
I was late! I spent so much time dressing up that almost forty minutes had passed. I quickly sped off toward Fraser Medical Center. A few moments later, the massive building of the private hospital came into view. Ambulances were pulling in one after another, while various luxury vehicles lined up along the VIP driveway.
When I stepped into the lobby, I immediately felt the unique vibe of the place. Quiet, spotlessly clean, completely different from the other hospitals where my friends were assigned. It was a good thing I had strong connections through my boyfriend, so they were able to pull some strings. It felt like I was in a hotel, completely stress-free. All the employees had great posture and were serious about their work; most of them walked briskly while holding tablets or medical charts.
"Miss?" the receptionist called out. "Intern nurse?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"Orientation room, fourth floor."
"Thank you."
I ran into the elevator. On the way up, I couldn't help but fix my hair over and over using the reflection on the stainless steel wall.
When the doors opened on the fourth floor, I saw almost thirty nurse interns already lined up in the conference room. They all turned to look at me at the same time.
"Sorry... I'm late."
The head nurse smiled, but it clearly didn't reach her eyes.
"Miss Montemayor?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"You're late."
I scratched my head. "I'm really sorry."
"Take your seat."
I quietly sat at the very back of the room.
The orientation started a few minutes later. They explained the hospital policies, infection control protocols, patient confidentiality, and the different departments we would rotate through in the coming weeks. I listened quietly until the conference room door suddenly opened.
"Good morning, Doc."
All of us interns stood up together. I immediately shifted my eyes toward the doorway, and my heart pounded violently when I saw Dr. Fraser again.
He was wearing a black tailored suit under his white medical coat as he seriously scanned the entire room with his cold eyes. He walked in effortlessly, radiating authority.
The whole room went silent; you could feel the deep respect everyone had for his presence.
He looked at each intern one by one... until his eyes finally stopped on me. I instantly gave him the sweetest smile.
But his gaze lingered on me for only a second—he literally just glanced at me and cold-heartedly looked away, as if he didn't know me. I got annoyed. Didn't he even think I looked pretty?
What was even more annoying was that he left as fast as he arrived. He literally just checked on us.
I sighed as his broad back completely disappeared. Nurse Brenda went back to focusing on the orientation, but I noticed her cheeks turned red.
Look at this b***h. Does she seriously think Daddy Matthew would go for her when she's already so old?
She was reading off the assignments, and the interns beside me were quietly praying to get assigned to the VIP Ward or Pediatrics, where it wasn't as chaotic.
As for me, I didn't care where, as long as it wasn't the central supply department wrapping cotton balls and sterilizing equipment. My efforts on my makeup and perfume would go to waste if I ended up there. I needed to see Daddy Matthew all the time—it would be bad if some other woman started clinging to him!
"And lastly, Miss Montemayor," Nurse Brenda said seriously while staring at her clipboard. I blinked and gave her a fake smile.
"Since you were late on your first day, someone requested to put you on a special assignment."
I suddenly felt nervous. "Ma'am? Where?"
The conference room door opened, and Dr. Alcantara, the chief resident of the Surgery Department, walked in.
"Nurse Brenda, did you get Dr. Fraser's orders? He personally instructed to put the late intern under his personal rotation this week. He wants to teach the newcomers some discipline."
"Yes. Adeline Montemayor is the one who was late today."
My mouth dropped open. Matthew? He requested me? Well, technically, to punish me. Or maybe he just wanted to be around me?
"Miss Montemayor, Dr. Fraser is a known terror to nurses, especially to those who act stupidly. One wrong answer during a case presentation, and you might end up crying."
I grinned widely. "I can handle it, Ma'am! Even if he makes me cry every day."
The intern beside me gasped, while Nurse Brenda just shook her head.
When I arrived at the Executive Ward on the tenth floor, the medical team was already there. Matthew had his back turned while reading something on his tablet. He smelled so good—a mix of peppermint and expensive men's perfume that blended with the cold air conditioning.
"Dr. Fraser, the intern you requested for strict monitoring is here," a passing senior nurse reported respectfully.
Matthew slowly turned around. His face was serious, one eyebrow raised, ready to deliver a lecture on the importance of punctuality in this profession.
But when our eyes met, I clearly saw how his entire body froze. I adjusted my posture and flashed my absolute best smile.
"Good morning, Dr. Fraser! Intern Adeline Montemayor, ready for duty!"
His eyes widened slightly, looking like he instantly regretted calling for the late intern, who happened to be me. While he looked annoyed, I was over the moon because heaven was clearly on my side.
