He quickly brought back his cold and serious expression, even though his mood had clearly shifted a bit. I heard him clear his throat before facing the chart.
"I expected a professional, Miss Montemayor. Punctuality is the basic foundation of a medical practitioner. If, on your first day, you can't even manage your time, how much more when you're already holding a patient's life?"
"It won't happen again, Doc. I just got distracted fixing myself up, so I'd look presentable for you—I mean, for the patients," I quickly corrected myself.
I heard the soft giggles of some residents behind us. Matthew glared at them, and they immediately went quiet.
"Let's start the rounds. Make sure you learn something today, because I won't let any negligence slide," he coldly threatened before walking ahead.
"Yes, Doc."
While following him, I just stared at his broad shoulders. No matter how grumpy he is, he just becomes even more attractive in my eyes. We went around the whole department, and a lot of women were secretly giving Matthew meaningful looks—I have so many rivals.
After the tiring but thrilling rounds, I was left at the nurse station to finish the charts. While writing, I heard two senior nurses talking beside me.
"It's been almost a decade next week since Sir Gabriel passed away, right?"
"Yeah, time flies so fast. That's why I saw Dr. Fraser already sorting out the details for the annual Gabriel Fraser Memorial Medical Mission."
I stopped writing. Gabriel? Is that Matthew's brother?
"I heard the mission will be held in a remote village in Mountain Province this time," the other one added.
"Really?" I suddenly chimed in.
"But the screening is strict now. Only senior nurses and resident doctors are allowed to join because logistics are tough and vehicles are limited," the other one answered grumpily. I just rolled my eyes at her and got lost in thought.
A three-day medical mission in a remote area? That means I get to be with Matthew for three days outside the hospital?
I immediately grabbed my phone and texted Marky because I wanted to join. But instead of replying, he called me right away.
"Adel, are you crazy?" Marky greeted from the other line, sounding a bit amused but worried. "That's only for senior staff. Plus, it's really hard there, no proper signal, and it's cold. You're not used to that."
"I'll do anything! Even if I have to carry medicine boxes, make Dr. Fraser's coffee, or clean up there, I'm going. Please, Marky? Are there still slots for volunteers?"
Marky sighed. "Actually, they're looking for extra people to help in triage and the pharmacy department, because very few staff want to volunteer since it's far. But you need Dad's personal signature to be allowed to join as an intern."
I smiled mischievously while looking in the direction of Matthew's office.
"Help me, please? But don't tell your dad that I'm joining because he definitely won't allow me."
"I'll try," he answered shortly before ending the call.
At exactly twelve noon, the staff at the nursing station . A famous politician, who recently had a successful surgery at the hospital, sponsored a catering spread.
In the spacious courtyard of Fraser Medical Center, buffet tables were set up, filled with expensive food ranging from lechon and seafood paella to overwhelmingly sweet desserts.
"Wow, Adel, we're so lucky! We just happened to be interns here when there's a buffet," my fellow intern Joyce whispered excitedly while putting carbonara on her plate.
"Yeah. At least it lessened my exhaustion from the rounds earlier," I replied while looking around.
"Good thing you weren't intimidated by Dr. Fraser earlier?"
"Not really. It's because I'm pretty and sexy," I answered with a smirk. Joyce just laughed.
Of course, my eyes weren't really looking for food. My target was the tall, snobby guy who owns my heart (even if he doesn't know it).
"Dr. Fraser is over there," Joyce nudged me, pointing her lips toward the VIP table, somewhat far off in the middle of the courtyard.
My sleeping soul immediately came alive. I looked in the direction she pointed to, and there I saw Matthew. He was talking to some senior consultants, holding a glass of iced tea while listening seriously. He still looked so handsome even when he was just standing there doing nothing. It was like his spot had its own spotlight.
I was about to get food so I could sit at a table near him when someone suddenly approached their table.
A tall woman, also wearing a doctor's uniform, appeared. The ends of her long hair were curly, she wore thin glasses that made her look even smarter, and her smile was very beautiful.
"Who's that?" I whispered to Joyce, my chest suddenly feeling tight.
"Ah, that's Dr. Samantha," Joyce answered while chewing.
"She just got back from a fellowship in the United States last month. Rumors in the ward say she's Dr. Matthew's childhood friend. They were supposedly always together during med school."
"Is she still single?" I asked immediately.
"Yes. Looks like she actually likes Dr. Matthew."
I clenched my fist tightly. I need to join that medical mission because that's where I'll seduce Matthew before Samantha beats me to it!
