Chapter 2

Zane I sit here in my office at the desk looking over and sign off on paperwork for the things that the pack needs. I take in a calming breath feeling irritated. Being too busy with my duties to the pack, it's been nearly three weeks since I last shifted. I'll need to let the beast out soon for a run to calm myself.  "Alpha, we spotted humans crossing onto our land, heading towards the Western mountains. What do we do about humans?"  I'm mind linked by one of the young juveniles who's patrolling the western borders, still learning the ropes on guarding and patrolling our lands. I let out a sigh of irritation. It's rare, but Every so often we get dumb humans crossing onto our lands tying to hike up the mountains, ignoring all of the signs telling them to keep off of private land. A few humans have died in the mountains. The mountains here are dangerous and unstable. "Keep an eye on them and If these Humans get themselves killed, leave their frozen bodies on the western borders of the mountains to be found. Other than that leave them be." I don't have time dealing with the trouble that comes with humans. When humans come here and go missing, it only brings more humans to our land in search of their missing people and this isn't some open invitation for humans to be coming onto my land. "What if they try to cross down into the valley?" I'm asked by a different young male this time. I let out another sigh of irritation with them continuing to ask questions, but I know these young males are only trying to learn how to properly guard our lands and im sure these young males don't know much about humans. "They won't cross down into the valley. The higher up the mountains, the thinner the air becomes making it hard for them to breath. They won't come up that far to cross over down into the valley." I mind link them back. I wait for a moment, waiting to receive any more questions from them, but I Dont. I look over at the clock, seeing that pack dinner has started already. With how busy I've been over the past few weeks, I've been losing track of time a lot lately. I start to gather all the paperwork, placing them into the folder for me to finish looking over tomorrow. I leave the house and head over to the dining hall for pack dinner. As I walk into the dining hall, everyone goes silent for a moment, acknowledging my presence as their alpha. I give them all a slight nod and watch as they all go back to talking and eating as others get their food. "You're late again." My beta and best friend Rome says as I walk over and take my seat at the head of my table. I let out a sigh of irritation as I reach up rubbing the side of my neck that's a bit stiff from looking down at those papers. "Dealing with paperwork." I tell him as I look over next to him and give his mate Pam a small smile as she gently rocks their little one. "You see, that's the perks of being a beta. I get the respect of an alpha, but none of the pain in the ass paperwork." Rome says with a smirk.  "Maybe I should make you deal with the paperwork for a while, so you can have the full treatment of being an alpha and not just the respect." I tell him, causing him to let out a low chuckle. I look over at as a female sits a plate of food in front of me. "Would you like anything else, Alpha?" She asks with a lustful smile as she looks at me, waiting for me to say something. "Im fine." I give her a slight nod and watch as she walks away, glancing back at me. "Maybe you should claim one of the mateless females here. They are throwing themselves at you every chance they get." Rome says.  About three years ago I lost my mate before even getting to know her. She was apart of a large group of rogues who attacked us and once the fight was over I found her on the ground bleeding out. The healers here did everything they could to save her, but she was wounded too badly and there wasn't much they could do for her. I glance around the large dining hall, spotting a few of the mateless females who Rome is talking about. These females have lost mates as well. I'm not blind to this, I see the way these mateless females throw themselves at me. The way they compete for my attention in hopes that I will choose and claim one of them as my mate. "Im not looking to claim anyone as a mate, im fine with how things are." I tell him as I began to eat. I'm not interested in claiming anyone as my mate. Maybe this is how things are meant to be for me. If the goddess wanted me with a mate, then why would she give me some savage rogue as a mate who would only end up getting herself killed. The moment when we were supposed to meet is when she dies. That's something I will never understand, but I've made peace with it. I didn't know her. I wasn't marked or bonded to her so there was nothing to be broken or hurt about. "You'll need a mate eventually to start a family. You can't lead forever, you'll need a son to pass the pack down to." Rome says. "I don't need a mate to have a son." I tell him. I've thought about these things. There's not much of anything that I haven't thought about when it comes to this. He looks at me for a moment, before a grin spread across his face. "You lucky bastard. You get to fu-" Rome mate reaches over and slaps him across the back of the head, causing him to wince in pain. "What does that suppose to mean huh? How does that make him so Lucky? Is that what you want to do? Put babies in females and still be able to screw who you want because you're mateless?" Pam flashes elongated teeth, glaring at Rome.  A small smirk tugs at the corners of my lip as I watch Pam put Rome in his place. Rome may be some big bad beta to everyone else, but he's a chump when it comes to Pam.  "Of course not, it's just guy talk babe." He says rubbing the back of his head with a frown.  "Yeah, that's all it better be." She flashes him teeth again, before rolling her eyes looking away. I know Rome loves Pam more than anything and even if he had the choice to sleep around he would never choose that over Pam. "You see the s**t you get me into?" Rome mind links me. Him talking too much has always has gotten him into s**t since we were young juveniles, but he always finds a way to blame me. "But seriously, maybe you should think about claiming one of them or going to the neighboring packs and have a look at their mateless females. You claiming someone will get rid of all this tension amongst the mateless females here. I'm constantly having to break up fights at the training ground. These females are losing their s**t to be the one you claim." Rome says talking to me through the mind link to keep our conversation from Pam. I look around again, listening to what he's telling me, but im still not interested in claiming anyone. **** *** ** The next morning I sit up and let out a sigh, feeling the beast wanting to be let out.  I let out another sigh as throwing the covers off of me, getting out of bed to go for a run. I leave out the house and take in a deep breath of the warm fresh air of the valley. It may be freezing cold in the mountains surrounding us, but it's always nice and warm down here in the valley. As I take a step forward, I feel my body heat up and my bones start to reform as I shift into my beast, leaping forward on all fours, taking off towards the forest. I feel the beast relax in the back of my mind as I run, heading into the forest. I take in a deep breath as I run, inhaling all the different scents of the forest. I move quickly through the forest, dodging the blurs of trees in my path. "Alpha, you're needed at the west temple." I'm mind linked by the border patrol.  "What is it?" I ask, wanting to know why I'm needed at the temple. I don't need to be called for something that these young males can handle themselves. "Those humans came into the temple and it looks like things have been messed with." I let out a low growl as I change direction, knowing there are important things in the temples that could have been taken.  Leaving the valley heading up into the mountains, I feel the temperature quickly starting to drop. The soft green grass under my claws starts to turn into rocks until my claws are now digging into the snow that's covering the mountains as I head west to the temple.  About thirty minutes later I make it to the temple. I shift back and take in a breath, letting my beast come forward heating my body up more as the cold winds blow into me. My jaws clench down as I walk into the temple, knowing that humans have been in here. "Alpha." The four young males quickly lower their heads to me in submission as they greet me, seeing the frown on my face. I make my way past them going to the back of the temple. I stop at the end of the passageway and my frown deepens as I look around seeing that things have been messed with. A low growl vibrates my chest when my eyes land on the open tomb of one of the elders. My jaws clench as I walk over to the open tomb, seeing the medallion is missing from around his neck. There's four temples west, north, south and east in the mountains of our land. Each temple holds one of the elders who found this land for our people thousands of years ago. Each elder holds a special medallion that has been blessed by the goddess. Together these medallions hold special properties, protecting our land, keeping the valley warm and our land beautiful, rich and fruitful and now that one of the medallions has been taken our land will no longer benefit from the blessings of the medallions. My breathing picks up a bit as a deep growl vibrates my chest. I tried to show a bit of mercy towards these filthy clueless humans and not slather them for crossing onto my land, and now they have disrespected and taken what does not belong to them! That mercy is long gone! From this day forward Humans will die the same as anyone else who crosses onto my land! I sniff, picking up on the scent of blood.  I look down at the dried drops of blood at my feet. I kneel down and rub the tips of my fingers over the dried blood, bringing my fingers to my nose. I inhale the scent, locking it into my memory. I stand back to my feet, frowning as I look around the temple again seeing that other things have been moved. My jaws clench as I close the tomb. I will find these humans and get back what they have taken.
