12 Josie I silently berated myself as I followed Alex inside his house. There was no denying that I felt bad for the man. He had been dealt a terrible hand. But that didn’t mean I needed to get emotionally involved. No matter what the truth was about Claire, it didn’t make sense for me to become attached to Alex. Either he was involved in her disappearance and was a frightening criminal, or he had nothing to do with it and was a lonely, brokenhearted shell of a man who ached for his wife. Neither of those scenarios was conducive to a romance, but that didn’t stop my heart from nearly beating out of my chest when I tried to give him a comforting hug.
