POV Selene Veyra. I barely slept after the conversation with my uncle Ronan… The day before, I had just… packed the few clothes I had in the wardrobe… I looked around the room that would be mine from now on, took a shower and ate. I tried to eat, but my mind was only thinking about my parents. About what happened to them. About how much I wanted answers. I wanted. I couldn't sleep... I tried, but it was no use. I spent hours and hours at night staring at the ceiling, thinking, and then... at the window. I admired the night, saw some trees, the sky was full of stars, which calmed me down a little, I was agitated. I stayed like that for several hours, just staring at the darkness of the night... some time passed and only then did I start to feel a little sleepy... I only managed to rest for a few short hours. I woke up really early. My uncle had told me yesterday that I would be going to school. At the orphanage, I learned to read the basics, but it wasn’t a real school like the other teenagers had. And now I would have extra classes, which would be good for me. My uncle got everything ready... So quickly. He bought me some clothes that were in a bag near the bed. There was also a backpack with all my school supplies. Well, I had to hurry now. I went to the bathroom near my room, washed my face, combed my hair, and returned to the room. I put on new pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and a jacket that matched the pants... I was ready now. I actually looked pretty. I hadn’t had clothes like that in a long time. Only when my parents were still alive. I put on some cologne I had and grabbed the backpack from the bed. I was ready. I looked at my reflection in the mirror and told myself: “Everything is going to be fine. Relax, maybe the students won’t be like the ones at the orphanage.” I tried to think positive and left my room. I went downstairs and found my uncle Ronan sitting at the table. He called me over, and I looked at the table. There were fruits, juice, bread. I sat down and grabbed some juice and ate a little bread with butter, just to put something in my stomach. After taking a sip of his coffee, Ronan said: “Good morning, Selene. Today will be your first day of school. We’re at the beginning of the school year… and before you go, I need to tell you a few things.” “All right,” I said, finishing my bread. I took a few sips of juice and he went on. “Well, I need to focus on my work. I’m looking for the ones who killed your parents. That’s why I can’t go with you to school. They might be nearby, and they could recognize my scent and know who I am.” That sentence… got stuck in my mind. It was like my uncle… was hiding something more from me. “I can’t tell you everything right now, Selene. It’s too much for you to process. But I’ll tell you little by little, so you’ll be prepared.” He paused and drank his coffee. His expression grew more serious now. "Vivianne will be here soon. She'll take you to school and help you while I'm at work. She's family, you can trust her. I'll be back tonight." He got up from the table and I did the same. I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand and went over to him. "Are you okay, Selene? Will you be alright?” I tried to be honest. “Not really, but… I will be. Thank you for explaining some things to me.” I tried to sound confident. My uncle nodded and walked me to the big gate. Behind it there was a white car. I didn’t know the brand, I just knew it looked really expensive. “I have to go to work. See you later,” he said, placing his hand on my shoulder. I just smiled at him in goodbye. I walked over to the car, went to the back door and got in. After fastening my seat belt, I looked at the woman named Vivianne… she had to be my uncle’s girlfriend. She was pretty. Very elegant, her clothes looked like they were from some expensive brand. She had long, black, wavy hair. “Good morning, Selene. Excited for school?” She turned her face slightly, and I could see how beautiful she really was. Her skin was a warm brown tone, her eyes striking, full lips. I nodded slowly. “Not really, to be honest.” She looked ahead and the car started moving. “I’m sure everything will go well on your first day. I’ll explain a few things to you.” “All right,” I just agreed. She seemed serious and, at the same time, attentive with me. Which was… a good thing. No one had ever treated me like that before. As the car slowly left the forested area and entered the city, I focused on her voice. “Did your uncle Ronan tell you some things? About what’s going on?” “Well… he told me a few things. About what happened to my parents. About some people who aren’t human, I didn’t really understand it. But I just want them to pay for everything they did to my parents,” I said, determined. Vivianne nodded. “And they will pay, Selene, for what they did to your parents. You need to know other things, and I’m going to tell you.” I was getting more curious by the second. Even not knowing who these people were, I was willing to face whatever it took.
