Suddenly, the heavy metallic click of the bathroom latch echoed in the corridor.
The intense, conspiratorial atmosphere vanished instantly. The four of us physically shifted, arranging ourselves in a loose, protective semicircle around the door as it slowly swung inward.
The breath completely left my lungs.
Callie stepped out into the hallway.
Nate’s disguise was an absolute masterpiece, but seeing it on her…it defied logic. The midnight blue liquid-silk cascaded over her curves like dark water. The high, conservative neckline completely hid the violent, beautiful bruises we had left on her skin, but it only served to emphasize the delicate, striking lines of her face. The long sleeves flared at her wrists, making her look elegant, demure, and entirely untouchable.
